hi all thinking of rooting(was thinking of gingerbread) but not sure!
whats the most stable and fastest custom rom?
Battery life, like many here I imagine , is of paramount importance!
went through XDA but find it hard to make up my mind!
    thanks

Spent the whole day messing with GB roms. The best one imo is Gingervillian. It comes with next to no apps bit it runs stable and smooth and most importantly (imo) is one of the lightest on the battery.

I have been running the Gingerbread build of Oxygen for a couple of weeks now and it has been decent enough on battery except yesterday, I updated to the new RC7 build and the battery life has been simply phenomenal. The 51 up in the top right corner of the screenshots below is battery percentage remaining. With any other rom I have tried, I would usually be reaching for a charger around now.

Holy crap Mr Bloat! I put Oxygen on 16 hours ago (and in fairness i havent been using it much but it's far from idling) and i'm still on 66% battery. This rom is head and shoulders above the other 2.3 ones for battery.

if you want a rom for better battery, go for oxygen! the battery life is amazing! double that of stock 2.2.

and its a gingerbread port, only downside is that there is no HTC sense, but you get used to that after a few hours use.

loving this rom. Two questions though : How do I get the keyboard to alphanumeric? I hate QWERTY. And, on my last ROM I was able to have a toggle to switch between 2G and 3G, thus saving battery when not using the net. I haven't found a one touch solution on this ROM

There's a widget on the market called "power control" (I got the free one). It sets up the standard power bar widget where you can change all manner of settings (wifi/gps/sync/bluetooth/volume/brightness) anyway, there is a 2g/3g option in this. By clicking it, it will take you to the "mobile network settings" on your phone, where you can click to only use 2g, or click "data enabled" to turn on mobile networks.

It sounds a bit convuluted, but any 2g/3g widgets I've tried since rooting to oxygen gingerbread will take you to here, not a one-click solution (two clicks ;)) but there you go

Yeah have the two click solution working alright and have learnt to live with it!

    Thanks for the reply

Was looking to get the best out of my phone and was using MIUI and Virtuous Roms but lately after the update on virtuous battery seems to be pretty bad.

Is this rom still good, are you still using them?
    I have a Desire HD

Using Cyanogenmod 7 on my Desire, and getting good battery life etc. It's pretty fast too.

+1 for CM7. Make sure that you go for the current Release Candidate version and not the nightly build if you want stable (not all nightlies are) ;)

Coupled with CM7, I've also experienced great battery life using the Smartass V2 governor - you'll need to download a separate kernel that supports SmartassV2. Look for a kernel that's OC (over clocked) and UV (under volted) - more performance whilst using less battery power.

    HTH.

I believe kernel 35 (or a modded version thereof that's knocking around) gives you faster USB transfer rates than the version that comes with cm7, which is 37, I think?
Edit: I haven't done this though, for starters I'm not exactly sure what the kernal does, and also you can also get faster USB transfer rates if you start in recovery mode and mount the storage from there, fwiw

Does anyone suffer screen freezes with cm7 on the desire? Every few days I've to remove the battery to get it working again. I never had that problem with oxygen, but at the time I couldn't send mms or record videos, does anyone know if the latest oxygen roms got this sorted?

Have you partitioned your SD card with an ext3 / ext4 partition? Have a look on how to a2sd+ your SD card. Basically (and I'm sure someone else can put it better), your SD card is set up as fat32 drive, which is windows readable, and this is where you put mp3s and videos, etc. But the phone keeps all (or at least, most) app info in a ext partition on the phone itself, which is actually relatively small (its either 125 or 250 MB on the desire). With an extra 1gb of ext on the SD card, there is more room for apps and associated data. When you've done that on cm7, there's an app called s2e on the market which transfers all the apps across.

This is different to the app2sd / a2sd function that came with android 2.2, as that put some data on the fat32 drive, but not all.

I used S2E rather than a2sd, works really well with CM7. Can be download from the market. Using a 16GB SD card with 1GB ext4 partition for apps etc.

I can see pic2say for examply on the sd card when its loaded on my mac, theres loads of different folders I have music and videos in media then my apk's in app folder just the rest of it?

I will look into that assd+ now.

Installed the rom perfectly but was trying to formatt the sd card and messed up the rom and had to restore to ealier rom.Back downloading the canditdate version now and then Ill look at getting the sd card partioned if I still can.

    Any other tips/advise?

I formatted my SD card on my PC as Fat-32.

I then used Amon RA recovery on my phone to add a 1GB ext partition. Set 0 size swap. Then upgraded it to ext4 again in Amon RA.

Boot up. In CM7 settings set to install apps to Internal. Download and configure S2E. Reboot and hopefully it's Happy Days :)
