Getting myself a new stereo (head unit)

The old Sony XR-c210 I've had finally gave up the ghost. The LED has been knackered a long time but since a few days the lights on the front just flicker and it won't turn on any more. It was acting up lately so I think it's just the head unit and not the wiring.

I need suggestions on what to get instead that will work with my 10 CD changer CDX-636.

It doesn't have to be anything particularly flashy but something that will work with the changer (are the Unit/Changer communication protocols universal? or will I have to stick with Sony?) and just has radio and maybe a USB port would be nice.

I'd just get one with a USB and forget about the CD changer :) Halfords generally have some decent head unit stuff on 50% sale.

True, or maybe I should just wait for Lidl/Aldi. They usually have decent stuff with both mp3 discs and USB port. And bluetooth for the phone.

I have one of them in a landrover and for 70 euro at the time I can'nt fault it. I use the memory card slot and can fit much more than 10 cd,s on one card. The cd player jumps or skips sometimes anyway but I'd put that down to the vehicle its in or the rough farm tracks rather than the head unit itself.

I have one of the Aldi ones for over a year now, and it's great. It has a memory card slot, that i have 8Gigs of music on, but i mainly just connect up my nokia phone to it and use that as a media player, 40Gigs of music all the time, and a hands free kit for 70ish euro. The only thing i will say is that on some cars, definitely VAG cars like my Polo, the radio signal suffers, as i think the original radio had a signal booster to help it.

Thanks lads. I have a speaker phone so can play music from that so for the time being I'm ok but hopefully Aldi/Lidl will have them on sale soon.
I looked at Argos/Halford/Pixmania and their stuff seems to be dearer for what you get. If I start to go crazy without the radio I'll splash out on their units.
Apparently a guy in Loughrea, Pat Grace, can fix old stereos. I'll drive over and have a chat.

    Did it cost you much?

Sorry, yeah it was 60 (he had to change two circuit boards) but I like the stereo and it's still cheaper than getting a brand new one.
