The car cuts out and the engine light comes on, then the engine light might stay on for a day and turns off automatically. Happens about once a week.

What website did you get that off?

Its like the fuel pressure regulator is sticking and not doing what the ecu requires.
The pumps are awkward to get to as the are in behind the timing belt and will require removing the scuttle panel..wipers etc to gain access.
I'll see if i can find some info later..:)

This is the fault description for the Dv4 engine.
The first thing to do is replace the fuel filter if i has'nt been replaced in the last 10k or so.
After that you will need someone with good diagnostic equipment to see how the pressure regulator is behaving.

    Engine ECU BOSCH EDC 16C34
    Fault code P1166
After sales description of the fault code High pressure fuel regulation : Measured rail pressure higher than the maximum pressure
Description of the diagnostics Measured rail pressure higher than the maximum pressure (for 5 seconds)
Conditions of activation of the diagnostics Consult the associated contexts for the Pcode forwarding conditions
Conditions of disappearance of the fault Driving for 5 minutes
Down-grade modes if fault present Switching off of the engine
Irreversible cutting of the cruise control
Change to "easy move" torque invalid (Automatic mode of the electronic parking brake)
    Deactivation of the speed limiter
Switching on of the warning light and/or warning message Warning lamp MIL
Main customer complaints likely Lack of power
    Jerking/stalling
    Suspect areas Electrical harness
    Wiring
    Fuel flow regulator
    Low pressure fuel circuit
    Fuel filter
    Fuel high pressure sensor
    High pressure fuel pump
    Engine management ECU
