Gum removal during new filling?

    Hi,

I had fillings done on my front teeth last July but the gum beside one lateral incisor is very red and often bleeds a little when I floss(gently).

It looks as though some gum has been removed. Is this normal practise when doing fillings?

Also, is it possible that a sharp edge on the filling is aggravating my gum?

    Thanks...

    inflammation.

it won't settle until you clean it decently, so floss as normal. it'll hurt and bleed at the start, but will settle as the inflammation clears up.
the sharp edge maybe where the filling meets the tooth which could be where the bugs causing the inflammation build up first. you may need to get that edge smoothened.

Hi ballsymchugh, thanks for your post.

I am flossing as normal, I only emphasised 'gently' to explain that rough flossing wasn't the problem.

That's interesting when you say "the sharp edge maybe where the filling meets the tooth.." etc. as I was thinking that could be part of the problem.

Have you come across this before?

Also, does gum have to me moved/removed in order to get filling under the gumline?

    Hi M.
Gums, like everything else with a blood supply, can bleed if inflamed. The inflammation may be related to the filling and, if so, polishing a rough edge (if that's the cause) should resolve the problem. There could be other causes such as a larger space between the teeth allowing plaque to build up and irritate, it could be an underlying gum disease problem and not the filling. I assume the filling was deep if you say some gum was removed at the time, was this because the hole was under the gum?. If some of the gum was removed then it should be healed by now if all is well.
If you are concerned about something you had done why don't you go back and ask your dentist to check it, I imagine he/she would be happy to look at what was done and fix any problems.
