    Hi,
I am booked in to play three courses in St Andrews in April. We have time to kill on the 4th day as the ferry is a late sailing so we were looking at playing golf that day. Anyone recommend a golf course that is nearby and resonably priced or maybe one of the other St Andrews courses that we do not have to book in advance. We are playing New, Old, Jubilee in St Andrews.
    Thanks guys

The best course nearby is of course Kingsbarns (6 miles) which is expensive.

The best fun to be had nearby is Crail Balcomie (9 miles). A close second is The Eden course at St.Andrews with some great greens and holes.

Slightly further afield, Elie and Lundin links are also wonderful golf courses.

Castle course @ Saint Andrews? Haven't played it yet (will do in Nov. 2011) but have heard only good things about it.

The Castle Course is bold and in my opinion great modern architecture.

Wild greens, hazards in the middle of the fairway, lots of strategy and fun.

Not for everyone but mark me down as a fan. Expensive though and Kingsbarns is still better.

was planning on doing this trip But didn't get the tee times what we had planned to do was play a round back near the ferry lots of courses near the ferry if you are going to Troon then Royal troon might be a option.

I would suggest Prestwick or Western Gailes which are (very slightly) cheaper and a whole lot more fun than Troon which can be a bit of a slog apart from the holes around the turn.

Give Ladybank a go, great course which is used for qualifying for the open. Approx 15 miles from St Andrews.

    Good choice.

Enjoy The Eden. It is good fun. It was slightly ruined 20 years ago when they built four new out of character holes to make way for building the driving range on four original ones. But there's still plenty going on, especially on the greens.

P.S. You would be mad if you didn't have at least two rounds on the himalayas putting green.
