    hey all,

last thursday i noticed one of the fake virus alert hijackers popped up on my pc. as usual i just alt+ctrl+del to close it without touching it, then booted into safe mode and ran malware bytes, spybot s&d and avg free. looked like the problem was sorted. headed away for weekend, came home sunday and got a bsod after a while. restarted and looked ok. then monday same thing happened again. again i restarted and seemed ok.

yesterday turned on my pc and i get a bsod within about 2 minutes. I tried restoring to two weeks ago, looked ok, loaded up a game then bang, same bsod so i just left it last night.

its a desktop running vista home premium, 4 gig ram, ati hd4870 graphics card, vista should be fairly up to date.

tried removing each ram module and still kept happening, i doubt both ram modules are fooked? had updated my ati drivers through steam about 2 weeks ago.

    the stop errors are

    0x3b
    0x1e

my vista disc is in my brothers house in northern ireland, but i heard its possible to make a repair disc without the original disc?

the pc will boot into safe mode and not get a bsod at all?

    thanks in advance.

    Rob

I had to fix something similar for a friend of mine recently. He had a virus in the MBR of one of his drives. AVG completely missed it. Microsoft Security Essentials caught it but couldn't remove it.

Would you mind uninstalling AVG and installing Microsoft Security Essentials on your PC?

    Microsoft Security Essentials

(I'm not saying that one is better than the other, but since you had a virus recently it's possible that it could be something that AVG missed).

before you remove your antivirus you should try the fsecure bootcd from here https://boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=70260868&postcount=2

that way you aren't vulnerable to drive by downloads and such

on the off chance it's not malware related it's worth running manufacutrers diagnostics on the machine, leave the ram test running overnight

Delete the video drivers, shutdown and power off the PC, reseat the video card then start the PC and reinstall the video drivers from ATI.

Make sure the fan on the video card is clean and working.

Clean the CPU fan while you have the case open.

    Reseat the RAM.

Check that all drivers installed are 64bit versions.

thanks guys ill try all options when im home.

just a note, while in safe mode i had used the driver clean tool to fully remove the ati drivers, then i tried to reinstall an older cata, 10.5 but i kept getting an error "detection update failed" or something like that.

i dont have long enough in normal mode to install and drivers, so anything i do will have to be done in safemode.

    cheers lads, ill update later.

arggg its pissing me off. gonna try make a repair disc now.

    any ideas?

    boot to safe mode
search for this file "av8.exe" and delete it
disable system restore on all drives
    reboot
then run your avg scanner to remove the rest of the virus files.
then once ya get the all clear re-enable system restore and reboot.
