bought product online stung with VAT

    Hi guys just bought an adapter for my mac online and it arrived today, it cost me 55 euro/71dollors to my surprise the ups guy gave me a COD for 35 euro for VAT, is this right ?
    Im shocked :eek:

    Sounds about right.. iirc UPS/DHL all add a handling charge etc. for paying your VAT. and you are also paying VAT on the shipping charges..

    For more expensive purchases people generally factor in about 25%.. but for a low cost purchase like yours the handling charge bumps it up quiet a bit relatively.

    If you bought it outside the EU then you are required to pay VAT on it. If you bought it in a shop here in Ireland then it would have the vat already applied.

    €35 sounds very high but often shippers like UPS charge a 'clearance fee' of their own - ie they have already paid the vat on your behalf and so this is a service they charge for. If they gave you an invoice it should all be itemized.
