I read in the Indo some weeks back that the ministerial cars are being replaced? Apparently the old ones are unfit due to high milage and general wear and tear  Does this mean Enda will get an 11 D S350 Merc? ( Cowen keeps his for life) Oh and Noonan will a brand new Model E class? I see they only have two Mercs now in the current line up...

Well Simon Coveney was harping on for ages about the waste involved in Ministerial Cars and calling for a reduction in the number of cars. He also had visions of car pooling and the reduction in the number of drivers.
I can only presume that they'll follow through on this if they do get into Government. Maybe..

What's the issue with providing our Ministers with decent cars?

The cost of the cars is tiny, in the general scheme of things, as they are tendered and net of tax.

Now, to have two drivers, at €80k each p.a., driving each Minster, is a different thing.

It's another great ploy by FF to make life difficult for the incoming administration.

Ensure that new ministers drive around in the new cars so that FF can claim they are out of touch with the people.

Que some Irish People lambasting the new government for wasting tax payees money on new cars all the while forgetting who actually authorised the change.

    Drivers are on €80K/annum?
Anyway a Mondeo or Insignia is more than adequate for a minister to be driven around in, the country is a a loss making business at the moment.

When you take in pay, holiday pay, pension entitlements, accomodation expenses etc I'd say they are not too far from that.

I know their tax goes back into the system and all that but there is a payroll burden to the state on top of their wages.

I think a decent mid sized car would do the job just as well as an E-Class/5 series/S80.
