I'm a 16 year old, and i need help, its probably a dumb question but if i buy something from amazon.co.uk for lets say 500 pound, and its being sent to me in ireland it isnt going to cost anymore like duty or customs? like there is no way its going to go over 500 pound after i pay online? i dont really understand it but i think all EU countries dont pay that right?

It all depends on from where the package is sent.
As far as I know, if you buy direct from Amazon, it is shipped from the UK, therefore not customs or duty charges. If you buy from the marketplace however, it could be sent from everywhere, but it states it in the description, from where it is shipped. if it comes from within the UK, you don't have to pay, if it comes from the outside, you might have to pay customs and duty charges, if Customs open the package and it's over a certain amount (not sure about it, but £500 is definitely over).

If you aren't buying directly from amazon but buy from one of the market place sellers they host and that sellers happens to be based outside the EU , from china or the US for eg., you will have to pay customs charges that could work out quite expensive. You have to pay charges on any item that costs more than €22 including shipping charges.

If you post a link to the item you want to buy someone here will be able to tell you if you need to worry about those kind of charges.

I buy from amazon all the time and I find them alsolutely brilliant. I have purcahased books,Dvds, cds, software, electronic, toys and I never had a problem.

If you buy from Amazon direct it will be shipped from the UK , so no duty or vat issues. I was told there was a problem with electronic items when the Irish government introduced the recycling charge as Amazon had no way of charging it. The simple solution was not to ship those items to Ireland. This may well have changed now as I have not bought electrical/electronic items for some time.

If you buy from one of the sellers on Amazon Marketplace it could be shipped from anywhere, USA China anywhere and you would be liable to vat and duty if your package is stopped by customs.

Also beware of the packaging and postal charges with Amazon marketplace. Before you place any order with Amazon you are given the opportunity to review it. And it always shows you the final price, item cost, packaging cost , shipping cost.

Duty and vat are separate and are only due on entry to Ireland if from outside The EC

    above are slightly incorrect.

There's no vat / duty on books, so no matter where books come from there will be no extra charges.

On other products assuming they are dispatched by Amazon UK from their UK or european warehouses, their systme will calculate the additional VAT applicable to Ireland (now just 1%) so your order of £500 will become £505 at the checkout.

Once a company within the EU is selling more than approx. €70,000 to non vat registered entities (that includes coinsumers) they must register for & apply Irish vat rates.

So your purchasing from Amazon still helps this little country get back on its feet:D

To avoid opening another thread, I'll just hijack this one since the OPs question has pretty much been answered...

Opened my Amazon account today. Want to get a memory card, hopefully less than €25. I've registered my AMERICAN visa debit card (there's money on it after the summer). Went to purchase it...

Topram 16GB Class 4 C4 MicroSDHC MicroSD Card with SD Adapter cannot be shipped to the selected address.

also, shipping address is in Galway. Is this something to do with my card being american and me being here? I can't find any info. Cheers!

Are you buying from Amazon or a third-party seller on the website? If it's a third-party, then they've probably said they only want to ship that item to the UK. If it's from Amazon it's likely that there is something wrong because something that size should have no restrictions on shipping to Ireland.

No you dont pay customs from the UK, you would if you bought from the US though.
