    Hi All,
Does anyone know how do I get freeview TV in Clybaun? Do you have to get a satellite or what?
I can get RTE1 and RTE2, but that's all; no way I can afford Sky or UPC.
    Thanks,

Freeview is the UK only, Ireland is a bit different. Have a read in here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=56

    Hi

The below is for freeSAT not freeview, forgot to say you can't get freeview in Galway as far as i know.

You need a satellite dish, receiver, and some spare cable and connectors. Don't forget you need permission to put a dish up.

    Something like these kits

    http://satellite.ie/acatalog/BBC_Free_to_view.html#aFreesat_20installed_20SD

(This apparently includes installation, not sure if it applies to Galway also)

Or, you could buy something like this in Maplin (behind the Eye-cinema)

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/standard-definition-recording-satellite-kit-for-free-digital-tv-508268
    (I have this I think)

And try to install it yourself (you need at a bare minimum a satellite finder, cable , patient friend, spanners, cordless drill, screwdrivers, ladder etc). If you fail installing it yourself, there are always ads in the advertiser for guys doing this sort of work, just check prices with a few of them as they vary a lot i found out. Yes, I failed :-) The 1st option i gave here is not a bad price if they run all the wiring, put the dish up for you, tune & align.

You need Freesat for the UK channels or Saorview/DTV for the Irish Channels.

Saorview requires a UHV antenna and a TV that plays MPEG4 or a SetTop box that will decode the MPEG4 signal if your TV cannot do it.

Freesat needs a Dish pointed at the Astra2 Satalite and a decoder box.

Check out adverts.ie for some second hand FreeSat boxes (or even an old Sky box) and Sat Dishes. I'd recommend getting a branded 'FreeSat' box as the channels frequencies often change and new channels are added every now and again, and the Branded boxes update themselves. Lidl/Aldi often do deals but I'd stay clear, poor quality plastic dishes.

Their is a guy on adverts.ie who is based in Kildare/Galway and he is great for brand new Dishes, got mine, with all the cables and connectors for €30. His username is RobSatalities, keep an eye out for any of his ads.

Got a HD Freesat box on Amazon for €70 so my whole set up was €100, installed the dish myself and that includes BBC HD, BBC1 HD, ITV HD and loads more.

How close to Sky + (or NTL +) can freeview be?

I'd like to get away from paying €25 or so a month. But I'd like to be able to record shows while watching a different show- is this possible?
And to have a 2nd box in a different room and watch different shows on it?
Is the menu good for GUI navigation?

I know you can't get RTE on it.

    Anything else to note?
    Cheers,
    Pa.

here's a site that gives you a list of available channels for Astra 2 (28.2*E)
    http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html

some receivers can record channels, but you will need a dual set to record one channel and watch another channel i.e. an STB that has 2 receivers which will need to be connected to a double LNB.

someone mentioned that you need permission to erect a dish.. this is true especially if you plan on putting in on a wall that is facing street (planning permission required (stupid i know)) and if you plan to put it on a back wall of a house you are renting (permission from land lord)

however there are ways around this ;) attach the dish to something solid i.e. fill a bucket with cement and have a pole planted in it, no one can complain as long as its not a major eyesore in the back garden! or if you have a pole for a clothesline.. you see what i'm getting at here..
the last house i was in i had it mounted on a tree in the garden that had its lower branches cut off..

also keep an eye out on lidl as they have offers of satellite kits, some people say that they are totally rubbish, both my receivers are working fine and i've had them both for over 5 years.

all you need is a south - southeast facing wall with enough clearance that the satellite signal isnt blocked (a little search with google and you'll get all the info you need)

A freesat HD receiver is better than NTL/UPC and similar to Sky+ or SkyHD for free channels.
