Okay I've done something really stupid, my first provisional was out late November and I forgot to renew it. I have my full test on Friday, is there anything I can do. Can I just go into the tax office and get a new one or am I in bigger trouble?

If you turn up in a tax office in person and plead and cry they may be able to do it there and then, or give you a hand written one.

If not, generally most tax offices have it out in the post the evening you order them if done early so it COULD be there by Friday morning.

You can get it renewed in time for Friday.
Apply at the Motor Tax office tomorrow.
Ask them not to post it out to your address, but to keep it for you to collect on Thursday (or maybe even later tomorrow if it's ready).

+1 on all the above. It's not unheard of for the Motor tax offices to issue Learner Permits on the spot, just explain your situation to them and hopefully they'll sort it for you.
