Paying for a car in england to bring back here. Bank transfer? cash?

    Hi,

I used to buy cars in England a few years back, but they used only cost 3 or 4 grand maybe. Now i'm going over to buy a few more cars that could range from 5 - 20k . i am wondering what is the best way to do this. It would be stupid and probably illegal to carry that much cash.
I would not know the price of the car or what car I was buying until the day so I could not have a draft made out to anyone in particular.
Could i withdraw that kind of money in england from an Irish bank account and have draft made out then? Or is it easy to transfer money from my account to another personal account? I'm sure dealers could take credit cards?

Thanks in advance for your help

A regular user here, who shall remain nameless, just made a mess of this and ended up coming home carless and has to go over again on Sunday to collect his new car.

I would advise you to find out who the seller banks with and then ask your own bank how to proceed.

Also saw a CASH dog on one of the customs shows who could sniff out cash.

Last time I got the ferry, and the car was searched for half and hour by a sniffer dog that they said was looking for cash in Holyhead. I attempted by bank transfer (so had no cash so all was well there)

Tip 1. Dont skimp on hotel if you are getting a late ferry by sleeping in the car, its not worth it

If your going down the transfer route.... dont try it at the weekend.

Check with your bank if you have the "faster payments" (makes transfer instant)

Check if you do have instant transfers, check that the amount your transferring is not a tiny weeny little bit over their threshold thus making you wait 3 ****in further days longer.

If you do this you should not spend a stupid amount of money on top of the transaction, buying hotels, flights, ferry adjustments etc, and best of all you should not be suffering the longest week of your life waiting to pick up your car.

I'm surprised retailers don't have these at the door to help deter time wasters

Dont bring cash, even though its good for bargaining. A friend of mine went with cash and the garage would not accept it. Some anti-fraud laws they have over there or something. He had to get a bank draft. Contact your branch and find out where they are located over there, get advice.

Over there the screen prices are more realistic so the value of cash for bargaining is less again.

You could open a sterling account in N Ireland, and transfer your money into it, then you can access your funds when you are in England, I opened a First trust account in Newry without problems, apart from normal checks, but for some reason barclays in Newry said they couldn't do it for me!

Dealers can take payment by Switch... or Maestro or whatever they call it now.

I've bought privately with cash, but when I bought from a Dealer last year, they would only accept up to 5k in cash, rest had to be done via credit card pre-loaded with cash.

    @PaintDoctor +1

Pre-loading your credit card is probably your best option....it also allows a degree of bargaining if you discover a few scratches on the paintwork when you get there..... ;-)

A pal of mine bought a car in Wales a few years ago...and discovered that you can only transfer 5k per day...so he had to wait a day longer than expected (car cost 9k)....and it cost him a night's b&b...and another day off work.

I've purchased 2 cars in the past few years from main dealers in the UK (AUDI & Lexus) and both dealers requested funds in their accounts before they would release cars.

    +1

I've bought 3 uk cars and each time I rang the dealer BEFORE I went over to confirm they would accept an Aib bank draft. I've been lucky in that aib was on the accepted list of banks for the dealers over there.

Bring a draft that the dealer accepts and maybe 1 or 2 k to allow for a small bit of cash bargaining, even if it is only a full tank of juice.
