Garmin Forerunner 110 Lap feature

I have a Garmin Forerunner 110 and to be honest I don't tend to use it very much. I press the start button when I start my workout and the stop button to stop the timer and that's about it.

However I've noticed there's a lap feature on it but I'm not really sure what to use this for or how useful it is. So if I press the lap button when I'm doing laps, what will it do? Will it keep recording my main time in the background and show me my lap time each time I complete a lap? Do I have to keep pressing the lap button each time I complete a lap after that or does it know itself?

The manual isn't particularly useful in this regard.

    PS:
Sorry, should have put this on the Garmin thread. Mods feel free to delete/close this.

I have a 305, but I am guessing that the lap feature is the same.

I have set up a lap as 1km. At the end of the lap, it beeps and the lap time is displayed. I get stats per lap saved for the entire run.

If you use the lap button while running, it will start/end a lap at that time, so the stats for that lap will be saved separately.

As huskerdu said you can set up the watch to autorecord laps - I generally use 1 mile laps, sometimes 1km during races. It will beep and show you the stats for the lap once complete - it's very useful for the 110 as it only records average pace not current pace - so you can see the average pace for the lap (rather than the whole run) which is handy.

Press and hold the page/menu button and then go through the menu to enable the autolap function.

Independant of whether or not you have the autolap feature set up, you can also press the 'Lap Button' at any time. The main overall timer/distance counter will still be running in the background.

I have the Autolap feature set to 1 mile but when I am doing 400 or 800m interval on the track i will press the lap button at the start and end of each interval to record their indivdual times/paces. When i finish doing my intervals the watch will automatically go back to measuring a mile from the last time I pressed the lap button.

*The above is all for my 405, but I'm prety sure it works the same for the 110.

So I've changed the AutoLap to record how long it takes me to complete each km. If I press the lap button then when I'm out doing laps, does it time each lap and then reset to time the next lap?

As far as I can tell from the manual, the number in the centre of the display is always the time since your run started, and there's no way of changing that. Pressing the lap button will start the pace calculation again, but won't change anything else in the display.
But there's only one way to be sure...

    Hey I have a 110 too,

If the pace the 110 displays is the average pace for a lap, would using the speed function give you a "live" readout of your current speed on the run?

    Hope that makes sense :)

    Cheers

The 110 doesn't provide you with 'live' pace figures, just your average pace for your current lap. Set your lap distance to the minimum (think it's a 1/4 mile) and that's as close as you can get to real time pace figures. Speed is just another way of interpreting pace. Speed is a measure of units (miles/kms) traveled per hour, while pace is how long it takes you to travel a single unit (mile or km).

Sorry to drag back up this old thing but I just spotted this from Krusty. I had considered the FR110 but I would prefer real-time pace. Do you know does the FR210 have real-time pace. Some of the info I've found is a bit contradictory on this.

I am sorry for reviving an old thread but I have only just realised what the hell was going on with my 110...

While out running I would see my pace dropping and no matter how much I picked it up it always seems to never really reduce...Obviously I now realise its because I was only getting average pace...

Question on this average pace; Say you are running along and you hit finish a lap (1 mile in my case)...Does the pace reset to show you your new pace? e.g if your pace is displaying as 9.00 per mile (even though you are going faster than that in real time) will it jump down to the real time pace say 8.00 per mile as soon as you start a new lap?

Yes, in theory, though in reality, the pace is pretty inaccurate until it has had an opportunity to average out a few readings. That's one of the limitation of the 110 (though I always use Lap Pace on my watch anyway (even though it has real time pace)).

I wish it was possible to disable the auto power off timer on it. Ideally I would like to get a GPS signal and leave the watch in transition for the run leg of tris, but it powers off after 2-3 mins and loses signal.
