I have heard some bad reports about Athy so i'm very apprehensive about moving there. Its probably blown out of proportion im sure. Wheres best to avoid in Athy?

Have lived down here since moving from Dublin eight years ago, had an apartment within the town before moving into a new estate on the outskirts of the town in 2006.
Have to say we've never had a problem, we socialise in the town a lot and while you see an odd bit of messing it's no different to what you see anywhere else. The locals are nice and we've never had an issue

The town gets a lot of bad press, there is a post on this forum which deals with some issues which have happened

Sports wise there is a Gaa, rugby, tennis and golf club. A good gym within the Carlton Abbey Hotel as well as the KCC new facility.

Socially there a couple of good restraunts - La Scala and Nagi's being the pick in my opinion. Clancy bar is probably the best in the town.

Not a massive music fan but does be music on regularly in the Emigrant as well as the CI Bar

My best advice would be to take a visit down have a look around and see what fits your eye.

So is every other small town in the country

I moved to Athy with work a few years ago. I lived in the town for about 10 months. Whilst the Gym in the leisure centre is good. There is nothing else to do. I got involved in local clubs, but found them clannish. I am moved home but the commute is too long, and its costing me too much in rent and diesel. So I am moving to Portlaoise soon, Cinema, Supermarkets. Lots of clubs etc. The cinema is a big draw for me.

My advice, depending on where your job is in Athy, move to a town that side of Athy. Newbridge, Naas, Carlow, Kilkenny, Portloaise.

All much better than Athy. Most people in my workplace don't live in Athy, and recommend living in any of the towns above.

I disagree. I have lived in a few small towns. A few of them would be perceived to be absolute dumps. But they were grand.
Athy is just a dump, with really bad traffic problems, no good supermarkets/shopping, and nothing to do in the evenings.

Enlighten me as to the evening activities that took place in these other small towns.
I have already stated that there is no good shops as such in the town.

Stay away from any estate past Paddy Dunnes pub and you'll be fine. Castle park/ Greenhilss is a definite no-no. i was going to add clonmullion/The Hollands but it's not as bad these days.

Kingsgrove or anywhere on the Carlow road isn't too bad. Ideal place would be Whitecastle lawns or somewhere along the dublin road

Interfirm Soccer leagues. Lots of fitness classes. Music/Gigs, Comedy Shows.

Athy has fitness classes, but the traffic can be mental busy even at 7 o clock, so you can't make it out to any of these.

Also the selection of rooms to rent in Athy is appalling and the prices are too high.

And also the people of Athy are not the most friendly.

BTW these are my own opnions. I have tried to live in Athy but I just didn't like it.

If you didn't like Athy then you'll loath Portlaoise. Portlaoise seems to have a disproprtionately higher number of scumbags than Athy and is significantly more dull and dank. Locationwise Athy is better. Its pretty much at the centre of Kildare, Carlow and Laoise- 15-20 mins from Carlow, Newbridge and Kildare, 30 mins from Portlaoise and within 35 mins of Nass.

Boredatwork, you should have moved to Carlow. Compared with Portlaoise, its half the distance from Athy and ten times nicer than Portlaoise.

I'd advise the OP to move to Athy. Its a pretty nice town imo. You're pretty close to Carlow too, which has plenty of shopping facilities.

Hey, I have moved to Portlaoise, Happy out, Great room and house, for a better price than anything in Athy. Loads of Gyms, Cinema, Supermarkets - Tesco's., Dunnes, and Superquinn (not petits or perrys, both of those are terrible and limited in choice), good selections of shops. Good Nightlife at the weekends,
Also its quicker to get from Portloaise to work in Athy, than it was to get from Athy to work in Athy!

Portlaoise is far better located than Carlow,Naas or Newbridge for me and my needs/requirements. Works out good.

Athy is a hertige town which in my opinion means the idiots on the council reject any new proposals for anything that might bring employment or jobs into the town. Plus you'll have the likes of Perry's supermarket, Pettits and Shaws objecting to any such stores opening up in case they run them out of business.

As far as I know wasn't Athy supposed to get the college that now resides in Carlow and look at how Carlow has prospered. maybe someone can verify that for me!

Athy unfortunately has been left behind due to bad planning by the council ,greedy developers and general negativity when it comes to anyone trying to bring new business into the town.

Just look at the roads FFs. One long poxy street with a bridge you HAVE to go over to get from one end of the town to the other. They've been ****ing on about a relief road for the last 10 years and still no sign of it.

Trad music? Maybe Smugglers would be your best bet.

Hope it works out for ya Dave. normally I'd be slating Athy but I'm trying my best not to. Would be interesting to hear what you think about the place after a few months once you get integrated with the locals :). Maybe throw a post up here after a while and let us know what you think.

Andersons is another alright pub but the lounge can be clannish depending on what night your out.
