I would like to get a national view of what plans Clubs have around dealing with the extension. I have questioned a few clubs I know in the midlands and south and all are considering closing on Jan 31st, meetings this week to finalise.

    Is this a typical consensus?

not sure yet what we are doing, but i dont think i will hunt past the 31st of jan. I will step up the lamping etc instead, i think an extra month for birds isnt needed. hardly any birds around now was out saturday and sunday only got a few woodcock and mallard, met 12 hens and only one cock, others are saying the same thing

Having a meeting Monday night, I know there are a few fellah s who could barely contain themselves with excitement when they heard the ban was being extended, but most level headed shooters are not in favour of extending the shooting season. I guess if woodcock and snipe were included it would not be so bad because thats what we go after this time of the season when the pheasants are already scarce. But shooting only pheasants at this time of year to my mind is wrong.

there is talk of closing on 31st of january here, waiting until the meeting, most in the club would agree it wouldnt stand too good for next season plus theres plenty of vermin to go after

i dont think ill shoot after jan 31st. despite the season being short it was a good season and now i think its time to get cracking on building next years pheasant release pens and some vermin control.

I suppose we are lucky in that we hold back birds to relaease the 1st February, taht where bought up in June as poults, we will hold these till March now. Most will go for a voluntary cessation but for some the shooting will continue.

Its gas the NARGC etc are damned if they do and damned if they dont. LAds in our club where giving out about the ban and now the same lads are giving out about an extension.:(

I no that birds are getting scarce in certin parts of the country lads but another thing to be taken into consideration is the fact that fellas are paying enough for gun licences and gun clubs not to mention feeding a dog thats doing nothing for 9 months of the year for a season that was realisticely only 8 weeks this year,if this weather is going turn artic for a month every year from now on which ppl are reckoning it is then they'll have to come up with some plan which allows the season to either open a few weeks earlier or else extend it as were doing now. . . .

There's no extension up North and rightly so I think as we could still shoot every other game bar ducks and waders during the cold weather ban. So i've taken Friday and Monday off to make up for it. :D

We (Ward area , north co. Dublin) are calling a halt to the pheasant shooting at the end of January. We are just going to take the hit this season on the loss of a month or so.We feel all your doing is shooting your breeding stock and your neighbouring clubs breeding stock. This was the common view at the Dublin regional game council meeting on Monday. The season extension will come in handy for us as we hold our pigeon shoots in the first two weeks of February so now they will be in season and the Rangers can not say anything to us

hi ib 1981 if you shoot pigeons as part of crop being damaged by pigeons its rape your shooting over one way or another the npws can not stop you your providing a service for the farmer by law your covered

Yes but you can not use decoys or spinners as they class this as "attracting" pigeons on to the crop. Bolloxs i know but the first person they catch is going to be a test case for them whether your there by the farmers request or not

Small Wexford club, We're having a club meeting to discuss the extension on Tuesday. The general view is that it is unnecessary as what birds are left are half starved anyway. We'll be switching to vermin... :D

surely with winter barley, rape seed, grass and hoppers out the birds would be far from starving?

think i'll shoot until next weekend and then just go out with dogs and the dummy launcher after that. i want to refine a couple of things on the dog.

We have decided not to shoot into February, Good view birds knocking about still plus the extra in pens which will be let out 1st March. Going to concentrate on vermin, Fox and corvid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,656 ✭✭✭Spunk84

I think our club will do the same vermin wise. I have seen a big jump in the number of foxes which are out and about, day and night this last few months. After this weekend my priorities will be mainly on lamping and more training on the dog for next season:D Think I will leave the phessies alone and fingers crossed they breed:)
