    Story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/newsnight/michaelcrick/2011/01/gerry_adams_makes_british_parl.html

A resolution of the House of Commons from almost 400 years ago - March 1624 - says an MP cannot directly resign their seat except by death, disqualification or expulsion.

To resign his seat at Westminster to join the Republic of Ireland Dail, Gerry Adams would have to: "A Member wishing to resign has to go through the process of applying for a paid office of the Crown... There are two such offices - Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds, and of the Manor of Northstead" according to the British House of Commons fact sheet.

A Sinn Fein spokesman told Newsnight that Adams "wrote to the Speaker's office on Friday and informed him of his resignation. It's a non-issue from our perspective. He submitted his resignation and that's it. He's stepped down from that position. He certainly didn't apply for the Stewardship of the Manor of Northstead."

Manor of Northstead? Sounds terribly isolated and out of the way. Bit like a beach in Co. Louth really.

I'm not really sure how this will bother him more than the corpses, to be honest.

it would be hilarious if he resigned from Westminster and didn't win a seat in the Dail.

    The beeb are very polite.
We couldn't give a toss [about these rules]. He's not going to apply for these offices. He has sent in a resignation letter like any ordinary person. We want a byelection in West Belfast. There's no written constitution; they just make it up anyway. It's strange men who parade around in tights. Republicans are not losing any sleep over this."

Could have sworn New labour were to get rid of all that shite...obviously the tights and walking backwards were to their liking.

There's a lot of these obscure rules in the UK

When I was a college layabout and getting up around noon I used to watch Prime Ministers Questiontime

And there used to be a rule if someone unrecognized entered the public gallery an MP could say "I spy strangers" and you could suspend the business going on and clear the gallery

A quick check of BBC gives me this :D
In the 1880s, an Irish Nationalist MP caused the Prince of Wales to be removed in this way.

Surely there is some quango to tidy up all these

Ugh.. It also says that if a member of the public needs a poo an officer of the law must provide his hat if a toilet is not present. Idiotic.

I thought that law was for a pregnant woman who needs to pee.

I'd say its rather more embarrassing for the men in tights, meself.

"Bailiff of the three Chiltern Hundreds of Stoke, Desborough and Burnham" for fucks sake. Next he'll get a letter written on parchment in latin telling him to roll D20 to see if his Cloak Of Resignation works.....

What was embarrassing was his pitiful performance on Morning Ireland today. I'd expect the leader of one of our political parties to have even a rudimentary understanding of the realities of our economic situation.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,350 ✭✭✭gigino

    very true, he was pathetic.
maybe he can fool most of his voters from the electorate, the unemployed, though.

Could he just not, you know... WITHDRAW!!??

Gerry is an embarrassment to SF in the Republic. The man is an imbecile when it comes to economics and this election will be fought purely on economic policy. SF need to copy FG and hide their leader as much as possible.

    read this: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2011/0125/breaking20.html

An idealistic mad party which think the solution to Ireland's problem "defaulting" our banks is a good idea - then by all means, work away and exercise your right to throw away your vote.

Only a true dumb dumb would vote for this party with its current manifesto.
