2005 R5 2.5TDi Auto - Power Transfer Problem?

    Hi all,

My 2005 R5 2.5TDi Auto Touareg started making a pretty loud clicking noise a few weeks ago. It ONLY occurs when the car is being slowly turned at full lock in a tight manoeuvre e.g. when turning into a tight parking space.

I initially thought it was a universal joint but my garage (who are very diligent and around a long time) have inspected the drive shafts and everything is 100%. they can't see any mechanical problem and they can't replicate the problem as it only occurs very intermittently. It happens to me once every couple of weeks and sometimes, if the turn is very tight it feels like there is no power being sent to the wheels at all and instead something is just 'clicking' 'clicking' 'clicking'.

My mechanic rang a gearbox specialist and he said he had seen problems with the "Power Transfer Boxes" on some Touaregs. I may not have the name of the 'box' he referred to exactly right as then proceeded to say they cost up to €2,500 to fix!!

Can anyone here shed some light on this issue? Has anyone experienced something similar?

I have the car just less than 6 months and the dealers 6 month warranty is about to expire so I'd really like toi have this properly diagnosed ASAP so I can claim under the warranty. It would be just my luck for the repair to be needed just after the warranty expires!!!

Thanks for reading the above and for your help.

    Regards,

    Ben

Can't help you on a diagnosis but I would recommend you bring it to the dealer's attention immediately and before anyone else actually does anything to try remedy it. Otherwise they might have a valid excuse for saying its not their problem any longer.

It sounds like a box allright. Those touraegs give problems like that. Is it a G reg by any chance.

    Hi Corkie,

By G reg I assume you mean a Galway reg? No, it's not a Galway reg.

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
