What did you install/use that could have deleted the original?
What are you trying to do?

sudo nano /private/etc/hosts - error message says what?

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=785542 - Re-creating that file may work, might aswel try it

hi Conor, I sorted it by using my leopard disc and dragging over the hosts file on it to the relevant section on my hard drive,

    thanks anyway :)

Ah handy to know thats on the disk.

it is if you have this installed ==> http://toolbar-show-hide-files.mac.informer.com/

a handy app that when clicked in applications it shows the hidden files when looking around the mac

handy if you need to change anything in the inner workings of your machine

when I inserted the disc while the app was selected it allowed me to view everything on it and not just the few options available as normal

when you're finished ya just click it again and you're back to basic again :)
