A friend of mine is getting trouble with his Ps3, everytime he boots it up he gets the following message 'hard drive file system corrupt please restore', but when he restores it, it just boots up again and the same message appears....

How can he solve this??, and more importantly can he recover all his saved data on the hard drive??

    Any help would be appreciated.....

Sounds like the hard drive is on the way out.

I would use the backup save game utility feature to external USB stick or external hard drive.

    Manual here :

but thats the thing, he would do that but the playstation will not boot up properly, everytime he turns it on this message appears and he cant go any further.

Even if he selects the restore option the system shuts down after the restore procedure, and when he powers up again the message is still there.....

Definately sounds like the HD is kaput. Stick in a new HD and all should be okay.

Happened to me a couple of years ago. The hard drive is most probably NOT on the way out. It's most likely that the data was corrupted by switching off the system incorrectly i.e. from the wall or the back of the PS3.

I fixed mine by removing the hard drive and formatting it. Do a google search on it, there should be plenty of posts. Basically I had to buy a few cables from eBay so that I could connect the hard drive to my PC. I then downloaded the software for the hard drive and performed a full format.

Alternatively you could slot the hard drive into a mates PS3 (I didn't know anybody with one at the time). The PS3 will recognize it as a foreign hard drive and will format it.

I did all this on the old style PS3 i.e. not the slim. I assume the same logic applies but as I said make sure to google the procedure (the removal of the hard drive is easy but there is one screw that you don't want to mess up or you'll end up fecked).

With reagrds to all his saves etc. they've probaby been lost at this stage.

You need to go into recovery mode and try from there :

    Same thing happened me

    I rang Sony

They got me to do soft reset for all of these:

1st did step 3 (same result, would load to 100% then restart at same screen)

    Then step 4 (didn't work)

    Then step 5

System set back to the start, no saved data etc... but it works again

In the end my friend bit the bullet and formatted the whole drive and its working for now but my borther rang me last night with the same problem and the restore worked for him..............

Another thing Sony saw fit to remove from the console. Apparently in 3.56 there is no Recovery Menu.
