95 corolla NCT failure- advice needed!

    I expected it to fail but i have very little knowledge of the seriousness of the failures, any advice on cost estimation or whether it is worth fixing would be appreciated. Here are the failures:

    Suspension:
    • Rear axle imbalance 48%. the left shock is the problem and is noted as leaking in the visual/aural defects section.
    • Anti-roll bar links worn on left and right front.
    • rear lamp intensity: unnaceptable, think one bulb gone
    • transmission: cv boot on front offside is worn/frayed

    My major worry is that if i replace just the left rear shock will that leave the imbalance still be above 30%...
    The numbers are: rear nearside 132Mm and offside 68Mm=48%imbalance

    Shocks should be replaced in pairs:)
    Most places you go to sort it will recommend this.

    (edit) dont get drop links form Mr T. He'll want 55 a side. Tenner a piece from motor factor.

    @E39MSport: Thanks for that. Excuse my ignorance but what is mr T? 85 a side sounds workable. Will get the drop links from local motor factor as advised.
    Any comments on the CV boot? what is it?!!
    Are roll bar links expensive to fit, ball park figure would be great so i know im not getting ripped off!

    Mr T is a Toyota main dealer:)
    A Cv boot is a rubber yoke that covers the CV joint, they wear and split or fray. Part is cheap, labour to fit them isn't, there are easy to fit ones that don't require the hub and shock etc to be removed so may be worth considering.

    two new shocks about 120
    drop links about 20/25
    rear bulb about 10
    cv boot is an accordian like rubber cover that slips over the cv joint on your drive shaft to protect it from water penetration - the last time i did something like this the motor factors said the boot covers were only available from toyota - went to toyota 100 euro for two!!!!. one year later one of my cv joints went motor factors then sold me a new actual cv joint for 65 euro (COMPLETE WITH COVER) lol. take my advice buy a complete new cv joint from motor factors not just a boot cover from toyota.

    PS your mechanic will have to remove the cv joint to replace a cover anyway so it should'nt cost any extra bucks in labour to replace the actual joint.

    PS - if you're handy at all with a spanner, the rear shocks and definitely the links can be done at home by yourself. I did both very recently for my E11 corolla.

    Except that the ones from a motor factor will last a lot shorter period than the Mr T ones. Generally the boots go after about a year and they wear away. Mind you, on a 95 car, that might be ok but on a newer car, I would recommend going with the proper Toyota droplinks based on my experience.

    I am having a go at changing the oil and filter on my 1.3 xli.
    It has had synthetic and normal oil before and usually 10w-40.

    What is a good synthetic that would be safe to on the 4E-FE.
    I should note that it has minor oil burning issues with either oil type.

    Should i be getting genuine toyota filter or will this do? http://www.carparts.ie/Toyota-Corolla-1.3-1994/Parts.aspx
    Any recommendations welcome :)

    Also anyone know what size spark plug wrecnh i need for plugs for this engine? Might give them a go aswell!

    change oil filter as well ... if your car is burning oil try using 15w40 but not tesco :D try mobil 1 high mileage or so. With engine that small u probably have small plugs but im not sure doh

    16mm for the plug.

    Hayne's didn't specify so I just went out to the car and checked for you ;)

    That's for the 1.3 4E-FE engine.

    Haynes says SAE 10W/30 or 15W/30 for the 1.3 non vvti.
    Capacity for 1.3 4E-FE incl filter = 2.8 litres

    The spark plugs only take 13 lbf ft which is a relatively small amount of torque. Personally I screw them until the pinch then turn another 16th turn or less.

    Went to motor factors and got:
    4 plugs, oil filter, anti-freeze, castrol magnetec 10w-40(4litres)(dude in motor factor reckons the 40 will give a little extra protection if valve seals are fading) and a 14mm spanner for €62! Just waiting for the rain to stop so i can get to work!

    Nice one. Great satisfaction when you do your own servicing imo. Doing the front shocks on mine this week.
