    Where are you located?

RTE have DAB MUXes (MUX= Multiplex)on in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, and Total Broadcast have a MUX on air covering the south-east.

I think DAB is a slow starter in Ireland. I live in Co Dublin and I can only get RTE.
I rang FM104 and asked if they broadcast on DAB.
Answer: Da,what? Hang on I will ask. 4 minutes later. No sorry not yet.

I was living in the UK for a while and they are years ahead.

As for internet radio, you have thousands to choose from.
I love my internet radios, I tune into all-sorts.

It certainly is a slow starter, largely because the regulator, the BAI, have dragged their feet for many years in formulating a policy on digital radio.

They still haven't got a policy on it. The only people attempting to push the medium forward are Total Broadcast (which I'm a director of) who have invested heavily in developing their own multiplex and getting it on air.

Aside from RTE, who bought the equipment so might as well use it, there is no other DAB in Ireland yet.

Which is a pity, since that technology offers the best chance of increasing listener choice we have.

Internet radio is all very nice at home, but not workable on a large scale portable or mobile.

There was a DAB trial a year or two back and you could basically get all Dublin based radio stations, including FM104, on it.

I bought a DAB Radio today and didn't even think of checking if it was available. I'm near Fermoy. Is there a roll out programme for the service or am i just better returning the radio?

It's so frustrating when we can be so behind...

The one I have that does FM too. If yours is the same keep it you can tune in when it becomes more available.

    BUT!!
My understanding of DAB was apart from the digital signal you could pause, rewind programs on all units, but this is not the case
So if your DAB Radio can't do this it's a bit like having sky+ without the facility to record.
    Your choice!

What I think is that we've enough stickies as it is - and one about a broadcast technology that has yet to (and may never) take off in this country isn't needed. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Been hearing rumours they are testing in DAB signal in some areas in Sligo/county Sligo area over the last week or so - can anyone shed any more light on it?

The Freedab mux is live in Sligo now,I live in Ballisodare and can receive it with an indoor aerial, they have a mast in Sligo town and somewhere on the Ballina road out from Ballisodare! Its DAB+ only so older DAB only sets wont pick up anything!

There is a thread on the Sligo page about it!

Make sure it’s Dab+ but I feel that the Ox mountains may block your reception. Try positioning the radio on a window facing Sligo/ Ballisodare and move the aerial a bit. I picked up 11 stations!

Freedab messaged back and said they are upgrading the mast Arial on the ox mountain and works should be completed tomorrow night. I shall try searching for stations again then

ah right - i see its an independent DAB service . So no RTE or local radio stations on it (well not thats on the FM band).

So it works in our car DAB radio now. we are getting the signal from the Ox mountain.
I cannot get it on the kitchen radio , maybe its because its not near a window . i shall move it and give it another go one of these days .

How weird - the coast fm and coast FM gold are located in Tenerife and Gran Canaria LOL :D

That seems to be the problem with the freedab around the country, I can get it for a bit in the car in West Dublin but can’t receive the stations on the dab+ kitchen radio.

ah right - maybe the power output from their transmitters aren't that powerful maybe?

I did a scan today on dab in Dublin And noticed that there's a few more new stations 21 stations in total all 80ths jukebox been one of them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭castle2012

Have to say great selection of stations on the Dublin mux, All they need to do now is fix the coverage. Cuts in and out from Lusk to airport on M1, Also on M50 cuts in and out at finglas+blanch exits. Also between Lucan and Tallaght.

FreeDAB keeps going off for me but I think they are upgrading the masts in our area at the moment. When thats done I hope it becomes more reliable.

is DAB licenced the same way as FM in Ireland? - maybe its not if things like this can be started up like this.

strange website at freedab.net .. a lot of 'pigeon English and spelling mistakes and when you click on some links they end on .tk which is an extension for the country Tokelau, a territory of New Zealand in the South Pacific

Huh, going by the website, they're live near Donegal Town or thereabout...

I shall check this tomorrow with my Roberts Radio.

.TK domains are free, which might be the reason.

Alas, no channels found on my Stream 94i. Perhaps I'd need an external aerial, or the service just isn't active yet.

In The Netherlands the upper part of the AM band is used for broadcasting pirate radio stations. It seems like that Ireland are now doing a similar thing on DAB. Probably due to the RTE multiplex switching off in April.

Yea so are some of the FM pirates in Dublin . There must be a ComReg visitor up the mountains. Cant see why they would want close freedab as there is no competition with rte moving off in April.

being illegal would technically be enough for them to be fair.
in saying that i would agree that unless there have been complaints of some sort they may be unlikely to want to waste time and resources on it.
i'm sure we will know soon enough as to what, if anything has happened. the whole lot may be completely unrelated.

It is true - confirmed now by the operator on the bandscan thread

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭kazoo106

If this is true, and by all accounts it is from the bandscan thread, this is a reflection of the complete shambles which is currently going on with Digital Radio in Ireland, where one cheek of the posterior (the BAI) doesn't know what the other (ComReg) is at.
We have a situation where licensing for Digital Radio seems to have been delegated across to the BAI by ComReg (for reasons unknown).
The Independent sector is absolutely scared of Digital Radio for reasons explained in other posts, mainly it opens them up to competition. This same Independent sector quite literally get what they ask for from the BAI, instead of this being the other way around where they are told what to do. Look at the shambles which is Dublin Radio right now, all the stations playing the same thing on repeat, having had their niche licenses diluted because they couldn’t make it pay with their “licensed” format.
Meanwhile over on the DAB end, there have been numerous tests and trials over the years with absolutely nothing brought to market.
As it stands, the national broadcaster will turn off their DAB transmitters at Easter and that seems to be the end of the road.
Despite rumblings from other quarters and websites of an imminent launch of something in the major cities, it would be my view that something of a permanent nature would have to be “advertised” first. If not, it would leave whoever authorises such a thing to be exposed to a tribunal in the future about how this came about (a bit like Digifone back in 1996)
As it stood, the people in Free DAB grasped the nettle and were actually providing some excellent diversity on the airwaves, the signals were a bit hit and miss, but it was a very very welcome addition with almost every genre catered for.
Roll on today and we have a regulator who, in my opinion, once again have shot themselves in the foot. Let this medium be opened up to whomever wants to use it with a light licensing model, similar to what is emerging in the UK. The spectrum is there – lets use it and let the MARKET dictate who makes a go of it.
Radio in this country, despite what the JNLR surveys say is in terminal decline, time to get real and do something positive for a change before it’s too late.
Todays ComReg action, I’m afraid will just aid to accelerating that decline. I’m lucky to be living in an area where I can listen to overspill from NI on DAB so that will keep me listening to the radio – many others across the country have lost that extra bit of choice that they had today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,664 ✭✭✭rogue-entity

If DAB ever does get licensed it will take one of two forms:
    a) 2RN will be the sole operator (at least nationally) and anyone wanting to get on the platform will have to 'pay the piper'.

    b) The incumbent radio stations in each market/locality will be granted the licence and you'll have a situation where the sole users of the multiplex will be those stations and perhaps local community operations but on their whims and terms.

I'd be delighted to be wrong, and I have heard rumours of a national commercial DAB Mux but as with everything in Ireland - I'll believe it when I see it.

Internet reaches many areas in the world, and thus does Internet radio. It has expanded enormously with an estimated 19,000 stations currently available, including many traditional FM /AM simulcasting their content over the Internet.
