    Hey

awhile ago myself and another boards member Kitty-Kitty were talking about setting up an independent anime club in Dublin where older and mature anime fans can meet up, socialise and par take in events.

The Dublin Anime Club was set up by two members of Boards.ie who wanted to share their interest in old, retro anime with fellow fans. Our aim is to make this a sociable society with many events on the way. We do showings, cafe evening, drinks and pub quizzes. This is a society where older and mature anime fans can meet each another and talk about anime back in the day.

Of course all ages are welcome smile.gif Our very first event will take place on Friday the 4th of February meeting in Yamamori along the Quays at 7pm and then drinks afterwards.

We hope to see many of you there. :)

Awww, not much of a take-up so far - we'd be glad to see you, though, random and anyone else who shows up!

I wont get off until 9 or 10 that night so I will peruse on over to where the drinks are. Any idea of location for those?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 221 ✭✭Kitty-kitty

That's a very good question! Anyone any input on that? To my memory the nearest ones are the Winding Stair and what used to be Pravda (the Grand Social). On a Friday night Temple Bar across the bridge will be packed out, so we might want to stay this side of the river.

    The Pravda sounds good.:)

Busy that evening unfortunately, but interesting you mention Yamamori.

I was having lunch there last week, and was seated near four girls, who I realised towards the end of my meal were talking about Anime, specifically Orihime from Bleach.

I wonder was that you guys?

No it wasn't me. If anyone is running late or if you think you will be late, feel free to pm me asking for my no.

Hope to see you all tomorrow.:)

Eek, Butters, take my name off there please. Gasp, people will know I have a life outside the net.

Table's booked under the name Dublin Anime Society and they said it'd be grand if more show up, so no panic. Hope to see you all there!

Actually, that in Yamamori last week MAY have been me if it was the George St one (the noodle one, not the sushi one we're going to tomorrow). Can't remember if we talked about Orihime but we did talk about Bleach.

    Em....where is the Pravda? :-$

It is now called the Grand Social. Do you know where the Wooden Mills is beside Haypenny bridge? It is right beside it the name of the pub is written over the door.

Can't wait to see you all there! Remember, it's the Yamamori on Ormond Quay. Weirdly, the George St one is Yamamori noodles, the Ormond Quay one is Yamamori sushi, yet they both serve the EXACT SAME MENU. Weird.

Yesssss. Getting unreasonably excited over food is all that's making the work day go faster.

Or, you know, ten times slower.

This is music to my ears lol! I am 24 years old and a huge anime fan, but have yet to meet other anime enthusiasts my age. T_T
Too bad you're situated in Dublin as I am waiting on results from Cork, but maybe I can make it to Dublin now and then :)

    Hey guys

I am really glad that there is a demand for this group. Myself and Kitty are quite busy and I am very busy organising stuff for the Cosplay Ireland but we will try our best to arrange something before Nomcon.

By the way a few of us will be at the Exchange on this Saturday in Temple Bar, there will be anime screenings. I will be there and we are hoping to meet older anime fans and of all ages. :)

Have they decided on Paprika or Akira yet?

Hey, I know this goes back to over a year a go, so this is a long shot, but do these meetings still take place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 886 ✭✭✭randomchild

Dont know if it is, but would be up for setting up a new one if possible!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,239 ✭✭✭UberPrinny_Baal

    I'd be down with it.

I think most big anime events (Eirtakon etc) are specific spin-offs of particular college's anime societies.

No harm having a meet-up not tied to a college.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 rlsniper789

It would be pretty cool, we'd just need more people to be interested.

Just one problem, where would it be held?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 470 ✭✭Butterscotch

I take it I am maybe late replying to this thread. Around a year ago Kitty who is a con goer and myself had aims to set up an independant Anime/Manga society. We planned to do screenings, have a pub quiz and just have meet ups where we discuss the shows in great detail but we both just got really busy with other things. Then another guy on FB organised a few anime screenings in the Exchange which has now come to an end.

If the interest is still there I would love to be involved with an independent Anime/Manga society in setting it up or just attending one. We could have a meet up for coffee some where first or a drink and see where we go then. The Exchange in Temple Bar was a great spot for screenings but I think you have to be a member to book the room.

Oooh I didn't see the thread way back when, would love to do it! AFAIK the Woolshed is happy to screen stuff once it doesn't clash with any major sporting event or the like, it's just off Cineworld on Parnell Street. They do food, booze and it's a very large place with a few screens so I'm sure they'd help out, especially if a crowd were interested or if it was a quiet night for them otherwise :)

Sorry for resurrecting what is I'm guessing is a dead thread by now buuuut....is there still such an anime society about in Dublin today?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 221 ✭✭Kitty-kitty

    Hi there!

In the end, low turn out meant it didn't get off the ground, but have no fear. There are currently so many anime happenings around Dublin that there is reallly no need for another social group.

To follow the latest, I recommend following Nom-con, the @rcade and Eirtakon on facebook for news on the newest events as well as joining the cosplay and congoers group (also on facebook)

Feel free to PM me if that's all very intimidating!
