Buying a second hand car - documentation

This one might be worth throwing into the FAQ. (And apologies if it's there and I missed it.)

I'm buying a second hand car off a dealer in a couple of days. I'm perfectly happy with it - don't need any advice about checking it over or any of that - I've bought cars abroad before. On other other hand, I've never bought one here. What I do need to know is this: what documents I need to get off the dealer? Receipts, annotations in the logbook...?

All the dealer will require from you is to sign the new owner section on the back of the Vehicle Licencing Cert (log book). He will then post it off to the DOE in Shannon. Depending how busy they are it will take 2 or 3 before they will send you a new cert with your name and address as the new registered owner.

    Hi there,

I am also looking to purchase a car but may need to do this privately, what is the risk of an owner not transfering the car into my name despite signing it?, is there something else apart from a receipt that i could get.

Also should every car have a service record book, I have had a few sellers who were quiet puzzled when I asked to see it

when picking up the new car, YOU bring with you :
    • stamped envelope addressed to the DOE, Shannon.
    • you sign it
    • he signs it
    • you both go to the nearest post box and post it there and then.
