    Hi All,
OK so my position is this, I am talking with Tracta Motors in Blach over a 2011 Fiat 500 1.2 lounge

I have a bimmer 118d for trade and he is giving me 9k for this.

New car sticker price is 15,515 with a couple of extras.

What is the realistic discount i can haggle here? My finance is cleard with AIB and i am good to go...

I also have a deal with another garage on a 2009 Megane coupe 2009 1.5 dci
    also 15,500

    Any tips would be great?

With respect you've gone about this the wrong way.

1/. Always start by talking about a straight purchase. That way dealer will give a bit for cash.

2/. Introduce the idea of a trade in later. He'll struggle to reinflate the base price.

Not smart to trade in, you'll get a good bit less than it's worth. Sell it privately for an extra few grand.

9K sounds about right for a private sale.

Then the question is, can you get a cash discount off a new 500 with the extras you want.

I'll guess not much, and say your deal sounds OK.

+1. You can get a new one for almost that!

What are the extras and do you want them?... he has them on that car and can't take them off so you can bargain over them too!

FYI.. I got MORE for my car than I would have sold it for privately when I traded it for my 2010 Fiat 500 Lounge.

Be aware if you take this approach be aware that it will seem to you that you are being given less for your car. Its all swings and roundabouts. Irish people have a mentality, that all that matters is what they are getting for their trade-in.

    An example
    A)
You ask the dealer the price of the car with trade in, he tells you €15000 he will allow you €5000 on your own car cost to change is €10000

    B)
You ask the dealer the price of the car in a cash sale, he tells you €14000 he now only allows you €4000 on your own car cost to change is still €10000

The missing €1000 is the cushion a dealer was allowing to cover recon, valet, stock, advertise and warranty your trade in.

The other part of this is it will piss some dealers off, You may then find them a little bit more hostile in regards to negotiation later on in the deal.

I would say it more important to find a fair market value for the car you are buying, and a fair market value for the one you are trading in.

What i mean by fair market value is the average price for a car with similar Spec, Mileage and Warranty.

With such a saleable trade in if i were you i'd ring every fiat dealer in ireland. seriously or email them with a detailed description and photos of your car. Country Fiat dealers would eat you for that diesel bee m

Exactly the point that others have been trying to make, you got more on paper because the dealer discounted the fiat and dressed up the deal. It's all about the bottom line/cost to change.

I reckon I fell on the right car at the right time.. 10 reg in September.. had been their demo car for 5 months.

Now is probably a bad time to look for an 11 reg. Plenty of people with starry eyes after seeing a few on the road.
