    youtube won't work with Ubuntu why is this and can it be fixed.

    did you install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package?

    This is a package of commonly used copyrighted packages who's license conflict with the gpl license under which most linux apps are distributed.

    you'll find it in the software centre or open a terminal windows and enter
    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

    Though must ask, is it the video itself or the entire site? Can you watch stuff off other video sites? What browser are you using and have you tried any others?

    But yeah, Flash. Usually.

    Well, indeed if youtube is not working flash is usually the missing piece. But flash is part of the ubuntu-restricted-extras package in ubuntu! I didn't mention flash because then next week the OP might be back asking why MP3's don't play or DVDs ... all that is contained in the restricted extras package! The easiest thing is just install it.
