For any of you interested, there is an Energy Night being held in NUIG this Wednesday. There will be Poster Presentations in the Orbsen Building at 5:30pm. This will be followed by a Panel Discussion chaired by Paul Cunningham (RTE) on the topic of 'Averting a Future Energy Crisis'. That will be taking place in the O'Flaherty theatre at 7pm. I'd encourage anyone interested to come along as it promises to be a great evening.

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the organisers, I would like to invite you to attend NUIG Energy Night on the evening of Wednesday 26th January 2011. The evening will consist of a Poster Showcase and Reception beginning at 5:30pm in the Orbsen Building Foyer, followed by a Major Fact-Based Panel Discussion titled "Averting a Future Irish Energy Crisis" at 7:00pm in the nearby O'Flaherty Lecture Theatre, located on the main Concourse.

NUIG Energy Night is an entirely student- and postdoc-organised event, being jointly undertaken by the Chemistry, Energy and Physics Societies at NUIG. This is the first time that so broad a section of students have come together at NUIG or any other Irish University to organise such an event, and it reflects the seriousness with which we regard the future of energy supply and demand in Ireland. It is our hope that NUIG Energy Night will be a spark that ignites enhanced understanding, interaction and collaboration between energy stakeholders in the policy, business, technological and academic spheres as well as the general public.

The event will open at 5:30pm in the Orbsen Building Foyer with a Showcase of the rich and varied range of cutting-edge energy research currently underway at NUIG. With presenters working in areas from biofuels to wave energy, and smart buildings to smart grids, the Showcase will provide attendees and researchers alike with the opportunity to meet, learn about and exchange ideas on the future of energy in Ireland. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

The Showcase will be immediately followed by a Major Fact-Based Panel Discussion titled "Averting a Future Irish Energy Crisis" at 7:00pm the nearby O'Flaherty Lecture Theatre, located on the main Concourse. The discussion will bring together experts in the fields of energy technology, policy, innovation and business. Paul Cunningham, RTE's Environment Editor, and author of "Ireland's Burning" will moderate the discussion. Confirmed panellists are Professor J. Owen Lewis, Chief Executive of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), Paul Lynam, Chief Executive of Siemens Ireland, John Simmie, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at NUIG, founder of the Combustion Chemistry Centre and energy expert, Neil Walker, Head of the Energy and Environment Unit at the Irish Business Employers Confederation (IBEC), and Philip Walton, Emeritus Professor of Physics at NUIG and nuclear energy authority. The moderated discussion will run for 90 minutes, with 30 minutes for questions from the audience. Prizes for the best student posters from the Showcase will be awarded after the Panel Discussion.
