Just like the civil service who order our goverment boyos around as they like RTE have the same attitude to viewerswith too many staff with nothing better to do than dream up ways to ruin the good picture quality we have with DTT. The onscreen identifier stands out like a sore thumb now on palel tv's, covers faces, obscures people ie its a total irritant BUT what does some ... er in RTE do .. yes lets have another one. I just cant watch programmes with onscreen ..ite and analaogue is hopeless.

I can see it now when it goes on Stellite, one logo for channel, anothe logo for DTT then another one so show its on sat!!

    GUBU

Who can I complain to? If I was not paying the blighters I would just not watch.

    gbcullen

PS we have 5 channels FFS.

I agree. Every TV released in the past 15 years has had the name of the channel come up when you switch. Completely unneccesary.

I think the OP is referring to the logo broadcast by the TV station, that has nothing to do with the model of TV. A lot of TVs show the name of the station or channel number for a few seconds after you switch channels but that information normally disappears after a few seconds.

I think Blisterman's point was that there has been no need for the onscreen Dog for years, because it's easy to tell what channel you are watching - the TV tells you.

With DTT you aren't even dependent on a bespoke TV feature, info button can be used to check if you wish. Why not use all of the pixels to show content, what is the point in Dogs anymore?

The OPs point is that there are now 2 onscreen Dogs, one in top right corner, and one in bottom left on DDT RTE1.

Yes, I agree. I thought he was saying that the TV-generated onscreen data was unnecessary, I can see now that he was reinforcing the OP's point that the Dog is not required since the TV tells you which channel you're watching.

Are DOGs not required for copyright/broadcast right reasons?

For example, if a TV station records and rebroadcasts a news item from anonther station, or to prevent illegal copies of films being recorded and circulated?

DOGS are free advertising. Plain and simple. Some of them are needlessly huge tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭swoofer

BBC1, BBC2, ITV, CH4 = no dogs. But with HD even BBC and others are heading the same way but as I dont pay for those I am disappointed but dont feel ridden over.

They are gimmicks and toys and serve no useful purpose. The added one on RTE DTT is a perfect example. No regard for those viewers who hate them.

I have complained but will get a stanadard reply viz no of satellite channels etc even though DTT has only 5!

I can't see the SaorView logo being permanent - remember, DTT is still in trial status at the moment!

As for the channel logos, its branding, can't see it ending anytime soon. We might be living in the age of EPGs but its because we are also in the age of megachannel platforms, the Promotion heads need to make the channel stand out so stick the logo on the corner of the screen.

Whats the other DOG? I haven't been watching any RTÉ DTT in the last few days. Any screengrabs?

Eugh, that's horrible. Also, has the RTÉ ONE DOG got longer and moved out more from the edge of the screen?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,683 ✭✭✭Kensington

Looks like the overscan area is visible on that image. Most TVs chop it off so the RTÉ ONE DOG appears closer to the edge.

I thought it was considered bad practice for dogs to use a solid colour instead of just being transparent. Some TV's might suffer burn in from displaying a solid colour in the same place for long periods of time.

Early plasma screens used to. LCD screens dont.

So what's next for RTE? A Sky logo to show you're watching RTE on Sky?

    This is just ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

LCDs DO Burn in too, just slower!

    1) Direct sunlight fades the dye filters. If part of screen is in direct sun everyday, it will fade colours in that part of screen.

    2) You should see status LCDs in Call centres etc, Forms are burnt in in less than a year. I don't know what the "burn in" mechanism is on that.

Analogue should be the only service with an extra dog. "This Service is Closing in 2012"

No dogs or at worst one small very transparent watermark in corner on Digital.

I only get the small black border when watching RTE with MediaPortal .
My Freesat channels are fine .

Windows Media Centre doesn't show any black border .

BBC1 HD has it right, i.e barely visible.
Can I sue RTÉ if it damages my plasma screen?

so has rte junior got 3 now ? (i dont have dtt )

noticed on Sunday it had the rte junior on top left and rte2 on top right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

RTE Junior and TRTE branding/ schedules on existing RTE channels. No extra channel yet. Maybe in May 2011. Replaced "The Den".

Has anyone bothered to ask RTE about it? What the reasoning is behind it and whether it is a permanent fixture or not?

Waiting on an answer. I've asked the appropriate people.

Sorry, as much as I don't like the new graphic, I couldn't put my name to a "document" with bad grammar, spelling and punctuation.

I'm far from being a member of the spelling police, it's fine when it's in a forum, but when it's on a document trying to make a difference, attempting to make a point, really, there should be more of an effort made in formulating a coherent argument.

I am sorry that you felt unable to sign the petition.
I hope that you find another that you feel able to do so.
You are obviously a man of strong principles.
    But seriously?
I am not illiterate by any means, but all I can find are an extra 's' on an 'is', and two missing commas.
As previously stated, for obvious reasons it is not possible to edit a petition.

Does that count as a pack of DOGs?

(Sorry, incredibly bad pun - I did try to resist, honestly. :))

No. The Saorview DOG is currently only on RTE1.

Just had official confirmation from RTE. It's coming down.

Good - any reason given why the DOG is being kicked out?:D
Would be good if we had a dialogue channel with RTENL, either through boards.ie or through a blog on RTENL or similar. BBC tech has an excellent blog on such matters as HD quality, DOG, sound etc.

RTENL certainly haven't responded to either of my two emails about sound issues on DTT radio or on EPG content accuracy or clock setting on EPG - it's still over a minute slow!

Here is the reply I got from RTE this morning:
Many thanks for your email regarding SAORVIEW. The SAORVIEW service is currently a trial service so different options are being tested at present. The on screen SAORVIEW logo is part of that testing process. I will pass on your email to the technical team.

Will they test without that horrible RTÉ One DOG

I wouldn't sign it either for the same reason. If literacy isn't the problem, just take better care and proofread before submitting something formal like that the next time.

Thanks for taking the time to contact RTE about it though. Do let us know what contact details you used. If this logo ever returns we will all know who to complain to.
