Insuring a second car

Right folks I'm looking at getting a second car for the weekend (I know I'm made of money)

Anyway I'm hitting a few issues so I'm hoping someone will advise me of what the best course of action is.

The first option is a proper classic which is over 30 years. No problem there as I think I have one found that suits.

The second option is a modern car for the weekend, an 1998 MGF is the preferred choice.

The more modern option is creating an issue however. The broker cannot get me a quote as the NCB is being used by my daily driver. On top of that I currently only have 12 months NCB but either way with the MGF I will be forced to start off with none if I try and get a regular policy and already own another car which is insured.

Is there any specialist insurers that I can go to for a reasonable amount of cover at a reasonable price? Third party cover is really all I want.

Has anyone else had this issue and over come it?

Cheers for any help, if there is any question just ask.

I am kind of in the same dilemma aswell. My head is totally fried at the moment trying to move to a new insurance company.

The only other option is putting it in someone elses name and putting you as the named driver. I am doing that at the minute as the insurance is in the wifes name. I also have insurance in my name and the bonus is still recognised.

It depends on your own risk profile, but ins cos will often mirror the bonus in such circumstances - ie they'll apply a decent 'introductory' bonus to the second policy. As always, i'd shop around.

    Check this crowd out Corkie.

    http://www.campionins.com/

Call the Portlaoise office. They will insure anything over 15 years (14 if you ask nicely) at a reduced rate of €300 odd euros. There is a price list on the website.

I don't know for definite what my rate will be but the guy in charge of classics said there is no reason I should be loaded but he will know for sure once I sent him back the quote request form.

Its brought the idea of a modern classic back into play again :)

I've been doing a lot of shopping around.

My current insurer won't take anything over 12-15 years of age so thats them out.

Axa were good but still pricey.

The rest didn't want to know as I didn't have a a clean licence (no claims) for 5 years.

Regrettably, I suppose that's your problem right there. Are you far off the 5 years? Maybe a classic for a bit and then come back to it?

Its the classics I was having the biggest issue with but I was hoping someone would know of a good specialist for something more modern as I expect to be paying a shed load anyway.

I'm way off the 5 years sadly, I only have one back under my belt after falling from 3.

Axa were happy to insure me very cheaply when I had no NCB so I'm confused as to what the issue is now. They just said I was now a bigger risk

Seen its vintage insurance, it might need to be your second car and with limited use (on your way to work and you have an accident, its not insured). but i dont know.
I'll be looking into this, €320 for a 1996 300bhp MR2 turbo (as a second car) sound too good to be true:D.

Its mileage limited so you can use it for going to work AFAIK but obviously I don't advise you to use it daily. But the odd time or once a week should be ok.

TBH they sounded grand not like ringing Quinn Direct. The girl told me she could cover me straight away. The max mileage is 5k miles a year... That should cost about 50,000 euro on petrol in that yoke...:pac:

It was a guy I was talking to but again can't fault the experience and sales approach, he said it shouldn't be any problem as he has done it in the past but just wanted to check up on it first before any commitments were made which is fairly honest for an insurance company.

Sound guy as I just started chatting to him about the cars I was looking at. A salesperson with an interest in what they are actually doing and talking about is always a bonus.

Do you have to have your other policy with them too or just prove you have one? Quite fancy an ole Disco and I have a VAT number for the commercial tax if they are sticky on that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,025 ✭✭✭✭-Corkie-

Exactly. All I need now is someone that knows their stuff to look at that Merc..

Just prove you have one :)

Its run with the IVETA. You just have to join them when taking out the policy. It costs €25

No just prove you have another policy with a no claims bonus. They do commercial insurance aswell.

I think the problem is that you're not a safe driver. 2 claims in 3 years isn't going to do you any favours. If you can't afford to insure a 2nd car perhaps you should wait till you've built up a decent no claims bonus.

Is this another attempt at a wind up?

    Jesus your pathetic.

However to answer your claims I re-ended someone after a car two cars up (a learner on her first 100 yards on the road) hit the brake pedal when she went to change gear instead of the clutch. I never argued as it was my fault for hitting the rear of the car in front of me.

The second claim was for my car being stolen.

I can afford to insure it but the thread was created so that people could pass on their experience and tips of how to do it cost effectively as there is little point wasting money when there are cheaper options available. One of the options has already been of service to others

TAF I've extended an invite to you where you can air your issues with me but if your not satisfied to do this will you please stop following me around and get a life

Why bother waiting when he can insure one now for €320 ;)
And after discovering that he shares it on here which folks appreciate, then for you to come along with your childish digs.

It's ok, you don't have to justify your claims to me. Slow down and be more vigilant in future. Please, no more private messages inviting me to join your "men only" club either. I don't swing that way.

Rover James, he can speak for himself quite clearly. Good lad.

You were sent one private message as you well know inviting you to a place where you can air your problems in the open in the comfort of a car enthusiasts forum which is strictly unmoderated.

As for it being a 'Men Only Club' clearly you've never been.

Two of the founders are gay but I don't see what that really has to do with anything as its a car forum.
    I don't swing that way.

Neither do I but maybe your in denial

Your a real live wire though I'll admit that :D

No doubt RJ will be along to tackle you on your condescending tone towards him as well.

And finally for the 3rd time, please stop following me around making a twat of yourself. You can PM or join Macdroitwich if you wish to talk openly. I still fail to see why you feel the need to stalk me

Ignoring the crap just above this post some people it would seem have been quietly paying attention.

I rang Campions today to find out if they would be allowing me to proceed with getting insurance when the time comes, or in other words when I finally find the car I've been looking for. They hadn't fully checked the paperwork to see if it was ok but jokingly I mentioned I had posted a link on boards.ie and asked had they gotten many calls over the past few days..........and yes, yes they had gotten many calls and a number of new customers.

So with that I was transferred to the manager who thanked me for posting it and was told that they would be happy to insure me at the stated amounts in the ad even with my history. Happy Days :D

Now the searching begins for a car.

It has to be 1996 or older, no big engines post 1980 however as I can't be bothered with the tax.

If anyone has anything, or is indeed taking a trade of something like an MGF, Fiat Coupe or something they think I may like don't be afraid to give me a PM.

Budget is small but everyone says that :D
