Since that story about the big fox over in England I was curious to see what size the fox around here are.
I missed out on some lads that were very big but I had no scales so I have that old one so I leave it in the jeep at all times now
I shot a 20lb fox last week or so and this lad was 17lb. Neither were the biggest I have ever seen

depending on the ground but 99% of the time i never even look at the fox.. one the lights go out it is good enought for me, unless it is lying in the middle of a grass fields. most of my are shot in rough hill sedge ground and you could waste too much time looking for them

You don't know whether you've hit them or not in that case.

All lights go out once the gun goes off, either it's hit and dead, or running for the hills. Can't count the ones that aren't laying at your feet IMO.

dont get me wrong but would you not think it best to at least pick it up from the field and throw it in to the ditch out of the way.

thats madness sure whats to say your rifle isnt out
once ya pull the trigger its very hard to see if hes dead or not until ya go up and see
due to the kick from the rifle and the smoke
and the fact the fox is lying flat if ya hit him makes him impossible to see afterwards
and if it turns and runs ya cant see feck all either
unless hes very close to ya

surely you never shoot at a set of eyes without identifing the body with the lamp first so when shot (at) you would see the fox run off or drop:confused:

no mate i just ment that if ya fire the shot and the fox turns and runs its harder to see them as hes not broad side or sitting up with a white chest
id never fire at eyes pure madness

As i said , most of the ground that i shoot on is open hill ground and big rushey field , so there is no ditches to throw the fox in. Yes, there is times when the rifle jumps and you dont see the fox go down , but that is where you lamp man comes into play, as he should be able to see if the the fox runs left, right or backwards.
I never said that i at shoot at a pair of eyes. I said when the lights go out, meaning he is dead

I know a farmer who won't let lads shoot on his land cos the bodies of foxes were being left behind. He said the bones can get collected in silage and cattle can choke on them. Shooters should always drag it to a ditch unless your on terrain where it can be left where it fell.
