I'm hoping to go to Australia in October for a year and was hoping to work in bar tending. A friend told me I would need to do a course for this to have any chance of getting a job. But unfortunately I a have not been able to find a course that will suit in any way or at least not in cork..
If anyone might know anything it would be of great help.
    Thanks

Judging from the warm glasses they still give me I reckon very few do it, that or the course does not cover the very basics.

    check this
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=53005307

    and google

    http://www.google.ie/#hl=en&xhr=t&q=bartender+course+dublin&cp=19&pf=p&sclient=psy&aq=0&aqi=&aql=&oq=bartender+course+du&pbx=1&fp=f43ee6dfb7f518c6

I would also try emailing pubs in advance in Oz and see if it is really neccesary. Some might take you on at lower pay or unpaid until you have experience, and it might work out handier than having to spend time & money on a course.

Ah sorry, missed the cork bit and dublin came up automatically in google.

    here is one in CIT
    http://www.cit.ie/course/CR_OBARR_6

I found it using the site:.ie command

    like this
    http://www.google.ie/#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=bartender+course+cork+site:.ie&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=f43ee6dfb7f518c6

other more formal terms than bartender might get better hits.

The course that your friend is referring to is specifically for Australia I'm afraid, so you'll have to wait to do it over there.

It's the Responsible Service of Alcohol course (RSA), and involves a waste of half a day where they tell you not to serve drunk people and people under 18. It's a legal requirement to get a job in a bar there and is just something to get out of the way. Costs nearly $100 as well so it's a complete money making scam!

If you're able to get any bar experience at all before you go it will be a big help in getting a job over there. Although in saying that, I know plenty of girls who couldn't pour a glass of water but still got a job straight away. Think they're a bit more stringent on whether lads have experience.
