    Ok,

Playing my 1st game in 13 years this week. Problem is I can not remember any of the rules. I took out the boxes and as far as i know I've mixed up a couple of different years worth of rules etc. I was going to play the rules I last played.

So, if i have to learn all over again I think I might just learn the new rules. Whats the best way to get the current rules without having to buy an over priced box set. I've all the figures etc. Do they just sell the rules on there own?

They sell the rule books on their own. But like you said anything from GW is pricey. Best bet is try on Ebay and order one of the mini rule books that they include in the Black Reach set.

    Cheers, 50euro!!!

found a ton on ebay. What is the current edition? 5?

Honestly, for what you get, Assault on black reach is the way to go. If you're insistent on only getting the rules however, try e-bay for the rulebook from the box, as the hardback is €50 from GW

    [edit] Yeah, it's fifth edition

Considering it's your first game in 13 years you're clearly not a teenager anymore, unclebill98.

There's a number of clubs playing in Gamers World on Jervis street that are entirely 18+ (not that younger are banned, that's just the demographic) if you're interested.

    Underground Gamers on Tuesdays
    Dublin Games Guild on Wednesday
    Warheads on Thursdays

The UGG are more WHFB, so if you're interested I'd suggest calling in some wednesday after 7pm to have a look around and maybe organise a game for the week after.

That is, if 'Cavan, Dublin, Cavan, Dublin', involves enough evening time in Dublin ;)

Yeah, found a few on line alright. Just going to head to the local model shop to see if they can help or see what they have in stock!

Yeah, a bit older now :( THanks for the info, will drop into them next time i'm up. Just going to spend a few days playing to see if I want to get back into it. Dusted off all the boxes and never noticed the amount of it i've collected over the years!!

I wouldn't worry about knowing the rules too much.

Everyone is gratefull for new players and for the most part, they'd be delighted to help you along.

It only takes a game or two before you're familiar with the majority of the rules.

I played my first full game (1000pt) two days ago!

I knew the very basics, and had to be prodded along, but my oponent was very helpful and it went well.

I agree with Quozl, the guys who play in Gamersworld on Jervis street include some of the best players in the country but they are always willing to help Noobs (no offence) improve their game. I used to go there and get my ass handed to me on an almost weekly basis so was surprised when I did comparitvely well in tournaments. (top 10 finish in last tourney) Till I finally figured it out. Because I was playing the top players on a weekly basis I was learning their tactics and stratigies and using the ones I could against other people making them my own.

Well one of the reasons i stopped playing was because i was playing the best people. They tend to take the fun out of it and are far to serious. Noting worse than people taking far to long to move and make up there mind on things.

I did hear the newer rules allow for a speeded up game. My last game was a 15k pointer in the Model Shop in dublin. Lasted 3 days and after that i lost my love of the game. Sure even in tournaments they take it far to seriously, but i suppose you have to.

Well Toymaster on Jervis St are selling all they're GW stock at half price, including all the rulebooks and codex's.

Or if you know anybody who has the rules you could borrow them!;)

Hmm, I think the rule-set must have changed a lot since those days. I play other miniature games than 40K now so I couldn't tell you exactly, but the 40k players on a wednesday take about 2 to 3 hours for their games. If you want to do a 6 player day long apocalypse game you can, but, those are rare, as dull as dish-water imo and easily avoided.

The DGG has good players but they're a bit older and less serious about it, there's plenty of non-competitive gaming going on. The Thursday crowd (Warheads), while nice lads imo, ARE very much tournament/competitive gaming focused, so if that's not your cup of tea, I'd suggest wednesdays.

    15,000 points?

Yikes. I'm not surprised it took you three days.

The game is designed to be played at 1,500 points usually. Though this is flexible. A game at that level shouldn't take more than three hours at a casual pace, depending on model count.

I tend to play at my local college gaming club. The guys who play are of a mixed standard but all play for fun more than winning. There's very little of the competitive, win-at-any-cost tournament style play. This is what makes the game enjoyable for me. I'd say if you can find a group who plays like this you'd enjoy it.

I'm pretty sure you can just buy the book alone.
