Just thought I'd start a thread to help people in the same position as myself. I failed FAE last year and giving it another bash this year.

I didn't enrol for the revision (money making) course and just enrolled for the exams.
I was wondering if the textbooks from last year will do me for this year or will there be new books to get for this time round also do the institue give access to notes if you are enrolled for exams only.

Also whats the craic with the continuous assessment exam in March - i don't know what to expect here as we didn't have that last year.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Great idea to start a thread on this! Shall be really useful

I'm in the same boat, having to resit FAE Core this year due to the joys of Business Leadership!

I think our textbooks from last year should do the trick, although the tax one may be a little dated with new tax rates but I'm sure theory should remain the same. As for notes I don't think we receive any unless you fork out for the revision course, which I have no intention of doing.

This continuous assessment is worrying me slightly as we never did it before. Just wondering, with the institute infinte wisdom, if someone fully fails this does that mean they've failed the entire core already?? As it is worth one indicator

Good to keep on top of this though as feel we're getting a little left behind

    Cheers

Business Leadership (BL) is catching a lot of people out because people are looking for the same type of short cuts as with the other topics in the Core. "A good set of indexed notes" is not enough for BL. Those of us that went through the old FAEs are somewhat to blame as I don't think we've moved on in terms of advice and facilitation.

There is also a bit of an attitude about BL. "it's a load of b0llix so I'm not going to study it." or "what the hell has this sh!te got to do with my future career, I'll never be involved in some random change managment project" That might be true but the weighting is up to 25% yet when you ask people how much time they spend on BL it's always less than the others and then they wonder why they failed BL and "aced" A&A or PM or Tax in the Core.

The Multi D was a different beast as you could get away with "knowing a little about a lot" because you were given the questions. With BL in the Core you have to "know a lot about a lot" otherwise an issue in the case is not going to jump up at you.................."hey, that's an obvious BL issue".

People ask "What's this new BL?" and someone replies "That's the new name for the Multi D". That's part of the problem too. There might be some similar topics (plus some new ones) but with no explicit questions you have to know BL inside out. Someone who did the FAEs even the year before last might think they're giving you good advice to concentrate on certain subjects and not worry about others. It might be well intentioned but it's dreadful advice considering the it doesn't really matter how excellent you are at the others, BL could bring you down.

With very few exceptions most people will not find BL intuitive. Also, most of those doing the FAEs are not in a service line that helps with BL like Consulting.

I have no silver bullet for you I'm afraid but my advice regarding BL is to try your best to keep on top of it from start to finish. Attend all the lectures, do the readings. I know you're going "Blah, blah, blah" but BL is not one that you can leave for frantic cramming at the end. The new system requires a breadth and DEPTH of knowledge

The other thing I would suggest is to get some help if you think you need it regarding exam technique and some tricks that you can use. I don't want to be accussed of shilling for anyone on here so PM me if you want the details of who I went to for help.

Hi I watched a few classes of the live streaming online but have not got the notes. Wondering if anyone could post here the address bar on the top of the page of the revision material from the icai. Many thanks NewSue
