Using an Eircom Broadband USB dongle in a Draytek Router

Good morning, I am trying to use an Eircom USB dongle plugged directly into a Draytek Vigor wireless router. Got a lot of equipment in the house and it suits us to have remote/internet access to it, CCTV etc.

I previously had a 3 USB dongle working in this exact setup (although it was so intermittent in the end that we had to cancel it). Aware this is not 'proper broadband' however there we have no choice, can't get wired broadband where we live.

The Eircom USB dongle works fine when plugged into the laptop but I can't get it to connect when plugged into the Draytek router. I have the correct PIN entered and I tried the same APN that shows up when the USB is plugged into the laptop 'broadband.eircommbb.ie' and an Access No of '*99#'

No luck guys with all permutations I tried, any ideas?
I have this USB dongle on trial from our Eircom account chap and so far the connection is much better in the house than we used to get with 3. If that continues then we'll likely get an account and run with that however it has to work in the Draytek router to be of any real use to us.

    Many thanks for your advice.

You'll need to check the compatibility list to see if the Draytek supports your current modem or not. If it doesn't, then it's not going to work. Even if it does, using a 3G connection for remote access is a bad idea. It will never be reliable, no matter the operator or the speed you currently get. It's not an always on connection, so you are guaranteed to drop sooner or later.

    Hi jor el,

The Draytek router supported the 3 USB modem and that was the same Huawei E180 device so I guess the Eircom modem should be compatible.

I am aware its not an 'always on' solution and will get dropped but as I pointed out there is nothing else available, some of us (country folk) have no choice in modern day Ireland :).

Any ideas on the modem settings I should be using???????

    TY

The only setting you really need is the APN, which you have, and possibly a username and password. There's no reason for it not to work if you have them right.
