USB ports failing one by one

I have 6 USB ports on my PC - 4 back and two front. As of about 6 months ago the front two stated failing to recognise USB devices (mostly memory sticks) quite regularly. Now they don't recognise anything at all. More recently the back ports stopped working if I plugged in more than two devices at a time. dmesg gives me an error saying failed to enumerate device on port

What is the most likley cause of USB port failure? I've reinstalled a couple of times in the last few months so I'm fairly sure there is a hardware issue. Is there some way of testing the ports on the motherboard or am I looking at a failing PSU?

Yeah, I'd probably save time and money by ruling out the easier to replace bits first.
