Single party minority government

Watching the week in politics last night . . It ended rather abruptly with a suggestion by Sean O'Rourke that was never really debated but which left me thinking . .

I think FG themselves acknowledge that it is very unlikely that they will get an overall majority but they may be close enough to only need say 50% of the Labour seats in order to form a government . . Depending on how the numbers fall there may be an opportunity for them to form a minority government with support from the opposition benches from FF . . Am not talking about coalition or anything . . What O'Rourke was suggesting last night was that FF give FG an effective blank cheque to pursue their policies in a minority government . .

I'm wondering what FG supporters think about this . . Would you prefer the opportunity to pursue your own policies in a minority government with FF support or would you rather enter into a government where your policies will be dramatically diluted by the Labour party in coalition ? ?

Are we trying to stir the sh** and freak people out that they won't vote for the mortal enemy ?

The problem is not FG, it is ff.
Have they the people to put the country first and back another party rather than try and do something for their own good ?

From past history I think the chances of any ffer putting the country ahead of party is nil.
I can't see any alan dukes types in the mix at the moment.

What are you talking about ? I have already said that I will vote FG in the next GE.

The question is very simple . . Which would FG supporters prefer. A single party government with voting support from FF or a diluted coalition with the Labour party. . . ? ?

FF would have to get something in return, ie have some say in the government policy. If FG accept that they're doomed.

They get to go away and reinvent themselves, safe in the knowledge that they have kept the left away from the levers of power . . politically there is not a huge difference between FG and FF . .

Plus, Kenny would lead the first ever single party FG government. . I dont see how they would be doomed ?

Hard to see how FG and Labour would work well together in Government. They are diametrically opposed on most of their policies. I'd say FG would rather be the dominant party in a coalition with FF. God help us all if that happens :(

Ah come on, AFAIK you have canvassed for ff and said you are a member since return from UK, you have defended ff in every thread on these forums to date, so forgive me for being a bit skeptical.

I don't want to see ff anywhere near government.

I would rather a FG alone government, since sadly I believe Labour are too pro union and by extension wasteful public services.
Actuallly I woudl be very pro FG government with addition of people like Shane Ross as a minister.

The next government needs to take on the public sector and particularly the wasteful HSE.

Saying that I would trust Labour's principles and ethics before I would ever trust ff.

I think Kenny is too long in the tooth to ever trust ff, even if the prize was being the first standalone FG government.

PS I think ff couldn't care who has levers of power, only the fact being that they don't.

You can be sceptical all you like . . I continue to be a member of FF and will continue to support their regrowth post-election . . Why would I lie about voting for FG ? ??

That's the point . . FF wouldn't be near government . . they would support the government from the opposition benches. Like you, I would also like to see a FG overall majority . . I would like to see FG take on the public sector too . . but we all know that the former is unlikely and the latter is impossible in coalition with Labour ..

BTW, I am constantly amazed at the people who loathe the Sunday Independent but yet think that the man who is their business editor is some kind of god. . . There is no doubt that Ross is a good investigative journalist but what has he achieved in either business or politics that makes you think he will be such a good minister?
