Catalytic converter - Peugeot 306

    Hi Guys,

This is my first post. Hopefully someone will be able to help me with my situation.

The catalytic converter on my Peugeot 306 (2000) started making a rattling noise around Christmas. Think my girlfriend hit a lump of compacted snow in the middle of the road and this may have caused it. Brought it to Fast Fit who said that it was probably a problem with my car that caused it and that maybe too much fuel was going through the engine. Don't know much about cars so not sure about this?

In August 2009 the exhaust broke off at the catalytic converter and I had to replace it which cost me about 350 bills. At the time I thought the guy in Fast Fit said that there was a 3 year warantee on the part but when I brought it to them before Christmas they told me that they only give 1 year warantees on exhausts. Its only a couple of months out and I don't put up many miles on the car. I feel that I may be getting a bit ripped off here. What do you think?

Also, I was down in Dingle for New Years so I drove the car down with the broken cat. Seemed fine, maybe a bit less power in places. The noise did get a lot worse though. Have also been driving around as normal with it since as couldn't afford to get it fixed yet. Now in the last week or so the noise has declined a lot so its not that noticeable any more.

Is it damaging my car driving on it and not getting it fixed? Tax and Insurance is up in February and also someone tried to break into it recently and broke the door handle off. So could probably do with putting the Cat issue off for a while. Is it even worth getting it fixed now that the noise has stopped?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Colm

Change the car if possible. I was given a peugeot to use while my car was being sorted. Theyre crap(mine was 03-306).My sister has a 06 206.She hates it.They make really, really bad cars. Thats my advise.

A broken cat shouldn't be causing any damage unless theres a serious leak. The catalyst actually saps the engine of it's power for the sake of John Gormley & co. So if its losing power something else is to blame

Its hit and miss, they're not all bad. A lot of the newer models have issues with electrics and sensors but that may be a passing fad.

Haven't come across many 03 306's, thought they would have been 307's by that stage. Had a 00 306 myself and never gave me any problems, Peugeot have a bit of a reputation for electrical faults but I wouldn't go as far as saying they make really really really bad cars..... Infact I would say they have made some brilliant cars in their time.

As for driving with no cat, I would t worry to much about it, some people intentially take the cats out of their cars. Emissions would probably be a bit higher and you would need it for the nct I would imagine but otherwise you should be fine.
