Hey I was thinking about renting a car when I land in Brussels in August, I will be collecting it at the airport and that will also be where I drop it off. I was wondering are there any restrictions on crossing borders of other countries? Am I only allowed to drive it in Belgium or can I cross the border to France or Germany?

Any info would be a great help :)

Check with individual firms. I always use Hertz on the continent and there's a few exceptions on where you can go, but pretty much everywhere in the EU is permitted.

the big firms normally are ok with cross border travel in some form or another.

    BUT.
for fancy cars it may be banned. And when it comes to bringing cars to eastern europe theres other rules again.

    anyhow.
If I were you, i'd find the telephone nr of the depot you are thinking of picking up from and ask them directly what the story is locally with what can can and cannot bring over the border.
All car rental staff at airports can speak english so language shouldnt be a problem.

definitely check it out. It might cost more, did when I rented in Poland.

If it does cost more I'd advise against the temptation of "how will they know?". When I rented in Poland the surcharge covered insurance costs if you had an accident outside Poland. Admittedly we didn't get the cover as it effectively doubled the cost of renting :o . However after more than one close call compounded by the knowledge we weren't covered I wouldn't do it again.

As with renting in Eire and visiting Northern Ireland, you just need to let the agency know where you plan on driving to as you may have to pay more insurance if you take the car to other countries. Besides that you won't have a problem with taking it to France or Germany.
