Car wont reverse properly - Why?

Before I take it to garage, I would like comments on what wrong with my car.
Its does not to reverse automatically slowly for the last 2 weeks but stay still and will only start to reverse move in a 'jump' manner by pressing the gas up to 3.
If I put it in Drive then reverse it will reserve just once.

Could it be gearbox or cable??

Automatic Nissan Almera 98 1.6L

If I understand you correctly, it is not reversing when you put the stick into the reverse position, is that correct? If that is the case, it would probably be a nackered gearbox, either way, I'd imagine you'd need to get a mechanic to take a look at it if you're unable to fix the problem yourself, as any attemot to fix it based on the unquaifed advice of any of us here on the forum could probably do more damage than good!
