Price difference in Ireland

    Guys,

I understand the basics of economics etc. However I can't understand why cars cost more in Ireland. Because most of the cars we buy here are manufactured in mainland Europe and Asia - surely the cost for a dealer to import them and sell them would be the same for Ireland as it is for the UK or other countries.

I always knew cars where cheaper up north or in the UK, however it was only after using autotrader.ie which lists both Irish and NI cars that the contrast became so gob smacking clear.

Can someone please explain to me why Irish cars cost so much more. Is it tax? currency conversion? import price?

Does this massive price difference really come from this.

I was trying to find the exact rates and see its around 36% for a new passat.

We also have the clocks in the car in kilometres instead of miles which means cars coming to the UK market are not shared with here. Cyprus is the only other EU country driving on the left with kilometres as their unit of measure. This may add a couple of hundred.

    Cost more than where?

Ireland is both cheaper and more expensive than variosu other countries so a blanket "costs more" doesnt make sense.

Go onto the Volkswagen Germany website and configure the new Passat, you will find that it costs more in Germany than Ireland. Not sure if the €800 delivery charge applies there though!

What are you talking about? Whether the speedo is in miles or kms has no effect on the price. If anything it should increase the cost of the cars in the UK because they are now the only country in Europe which uses miles.
