Does anyone know if it makes a difference the type of compass you buy or have any recommendations to make?
    cheers

Silva type 4, for general navigating in the hills etc. The first choice for most people.

Competitive orienteers will use more specialised ones (fast setting thumb compasses etc) (or the really good ones won't use one at all)

Sounds like the one for me :)
    As always - thanks!
