As far as I know the M7 route would be more expensive if you take tolls into consideration. Also, the newly opened M18 to Gort would give you greater distance on motorway.

Cheers. Would I still have to go through ennis if using m18? Looked at http://www.openstreetmap.org/ and seems m18 is from Gort to Ennis. Google maps was sayin to go to gort, then cross country to Corofin, Enistymon then Lahinch.

Is there a toll on Limerick tunnel?

Ennis is bypassed on both sides, so you don't need to go through it.

I would say, go via the M7 and Limerick, which will give you dual carriageway all the way to Ennis, then take the N85 from Ennis.

Otherwise, you can head as far as Ballinasloe on the M4/M6 before taking the crappy back road from Loughrea to Gort, and the motorway down to Ennis.

Tolls are much of a muchness - 2 tolls along the M7 vs. one on the M4, but the M4 is a bigger toll- 2.90, vs 1.90 each for the other (roughly, I think).
