Evening all, I've only started playing a while but one thing i've noticed is, I can't get any power at all..and i'm fairly strong enough but when it comes to golf.. drives going at most 150-175.. and thats only occasionally and all my irons probably 8-5 going the same distance 100-125.. any tips on to get a more powerful swing? Or is it just a case of off down to the gym? I'm only 15 too btw..

It will come with time and practice. As you said your only if, you wouldnt be expected to be hitting 200+ shots straight away just keep at it. And by the way dont touch weights, your too young. The best thing you could do it core exercises, i.e sit ups! good luck

First off, u should be in bed..School in the morning :D
For most people i think distance comes from technique more than strength. McIlroy is only 5"7 and is one of the longest on tour. If you can get your swing together, u will def hit it further.
The wider the swing with good hip turn to increase the your speed through the ball will help with getting distance.
Rather than increasing your strength, you should look at your flexability and if your muscles are warmed up.

how long have you got?,obviously your swing speed(at the ball)determines how long you hit it
have you ever had lessons as a kid?
some teach kids to swing nice and slow which is just pure bs.
you need to work on the transition of your swing but it's pretty impossible to fix here, there are some decent vids on the web, also with your irons you're probably opening the face like most beginners,my advice with your irons have your hands ahead of the ball and with your driver hands slightly behind or level with rescues
practice hitting it like this even if it feels weird for a while

this might be true once technique is nailed, but until then I don't agree.

a clubface hit in or around the centre of the face with a speed of 100mph with a driver for example will translate to a carry distance of around 230-240 yards, multiply 100*around 2.3-2.4

you see someone swinging wildly you might presume they have a really fast swing speed, not the case, technique is required to come in to the ball at that speed

so to sum up you're correct

Also.. I hit my driver what looks very high to me anyway, its 10.5 degree.. should I go down to 10/9.5 or just keep sticking it out?

If you are hitting all your irons the same distance and hitting them high so that they land soft, odds on that you are scooping the ball with your wrists or swatting it with your arms rather than swinging through it with your hips / shoulders. There are a whole bunch of tips, drills and so on on the internet that can help you with this, but in truth it will just take a lorra practice to get it right - it's one of the most common swing problems in poor players and fixing it sort of requires you to become a good player.

It really is past your bed time parky ( past mine swell) if your questions are genuine , then take in everything that has been said above , if not then hit it as hard as you can :D

Power and distance comes from the body not the arms! If you have the correct grip... Keep your leading arm straight. Your head still and turn your body. Your shoulders and hips need to move. Practice and you'll feel the power unleashed as you unwind!

It's your technique that is determining your distances rather than your strength. My advice would be for you to concentrate on technique more and in particular the basics such as keeping your left arm as straight as possible (if your are right handed), keeping your head down and relatively still, dont swing back past parallel, and work on your body rotating throughout the swing rather than letting the hands do all the work. The above points will help you to become more consistant in your swing which should lead to a better contact between club and ball. There's an endless amount of tutorials on the web and on youtube in particular so educate yourself in the basics first. And the very best of luck and keep at it.

One final point, we all had to start somewhere and im pretty sure most of us were in the same boat as yourself staring off. Stick with it and the more you improve the more enjoyable playing golf will become.

Sorry - one further point which is very important - The Grip. Make sure you are gripping the club correctly. Again have a look online or on youtube for the different grips used and which one feels right for you. Its the only contact that we have with the golf club so you want to make sure your are gripping the club correctly before you undertake learning about any other aspect of the swing.

I find that a lot of beginners when they start playing golf swing with there arms. This is the easiest way of swinging and will generally lead to more accurate shots. However real clubhead speed comes from the wrist break coming into the ball, an arms swing will only get you so far but couple this with a strong wrist break at the ball and you then see distance. The drawnback here is accuracy, and this is where timing will play it's part. When you have a strong wrist break your timing it everything, I find that if I have not played in a while I tend to spray it a bit until I dial in again. An arms swing in general will return the club to the ball pretty much as it came away but when you snap your wrists at the ball it gets a lot harder to time the contact correctly. Having said that when you do learn to do it there are them joyfull moments when Saturn aligns with Mars and the north star is at it's highest point in the sky and you catch one just perfect.... 5 iron to the green on a par5.....
