How to measure a stem?

    I know I want a shorter stem on the bike, but I've no idea what length the current one is, so I can't order online. Short of taking it off and into a shop, can someone tell me between what points a stem is measured?

    Centre to centre (with a tape measure):

    Most stems will have it printed somewhere on the surface.
