What criteria have to be met so that someone can stand as a (n independent) candidate for the upcoming election?

    Can anyone have a go?

(I know I can't, because I'm not a citizen ...but I can think of a few people I'd like to push that way)

You can nominate yourself or be nominated by way of your party affiliation.

If nominating yourself, you must get 30 signatures of people registered to vote in the constituency you live in.

There are no fees to stand as a candidate.

You must complete the nomination process in the 7 days following the dissolution of the Dáil.

You nominate yourself to the Returning Officer of your local council (usually the Sherriff or the Council Manager).

Why are there not more lunatics on the ballot paper when its so easy to do. All you would need is 30 signitures?

Already work commitments, family influences, time and pressures. Also monetary reasons besides low indications maybe of support. Then there is maybe the rest that some might not have the courage or wanting to stand before a large crown, media or public questioning gaze to have everything looked upon about them. Maybe some have even skeletons in the closets they would rather not have exposed or fear exposure by an opposition candidate whom might stop at nothing to gain one-upmanship.

    There are loads of reasons.
