Wiring & Connectors

Over the next while I'm going to be building a new V2 gearbox, and with it I want to replace the wiring.

What wire is the best to use for an AEG? I know sweet FA about electrics, so I really am bowing down to those far more knowledgable than me - but I am also eager to learn so if you wouldn't mind posting why certain wire is better, I would be very appreciative.

On top of the wiring, I'm also wondering what connectors are best to use, for connecting wire to wire (from Gearbox to battery connector; I like keeping that connection for easier stripping of the gun), wire to motor and wire to battery.

PS: If you can provide links as well, I would also appreciate that :D

    Hi mate,
    hope this helps.
When I'm rewiring AEGs and making up gearboxes, I use 18 AWG cable from componentshop.co.uk, their prices are very good and shipping is usually about 7-10 days, can't quite remember, it's been a while since my last order.
I like this cable as it handles high currents very well and is very flexible and durable, much better quality than what I've seen in most stock AEGs. Personally I don't find any advantages to that silver core or whatever it is cable. It's more expensive for, in my opinion, less. I'm sure others will have a different opinion, I'm not claiming mine is gospel.

For connectors, I'm a huge fan of Deans connectors, they're very good and can handle high currents and voltages no worries and unlike Tamiya's they don't melt. Although, unlike tamiya's you'll need a soldering iron, if you don't have one, you're more than welcome to borrow mine.

For motor connectors, I use the mini spade connectors from Maplin, it's like €2.50 for a pack of ten and they're very good quality. These one's, thev have a PVC shroud on them, but I cut them off (very carefully) as once you've heatshrink around them, there's no need for the shroud, it also lowers the profile. And for the gearbox to battery connection, just put on the male ones, these ones, once again removing the shroud.
To put these on, I heat the end up with a soldering iron and fill it with solder, then push the tinned end of the cable in. Let it cool and the heatshrink it.

I get heatshrink from Radionics, this stuff to be precise. It comes in 1.2 metre lengths and is very good quality.

If you ever need and help or want to see how to do it the proper way, feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to go to you and help you out.

If there's anything else I can help with, just ask.
    Ger:)
