Regular loss of Wifi connection with Zyxel router

    Hi there,

In the house I live in currently, there's usually 2 laptops and a desktop in use. Every hour or so, they lose internet access. The wireless icon on all of them suggests that it's due to disconnection from the wifi network. The wireless adaptor on all the computers says "authenticating" but it takes about 10 minutes or more for the wifi connection to work again. The only thing I can do to make it connect properly and quickly is to physically plug out or disable the network adapter and then restart/replug it. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 rounds of disabling and re-enabling the adaptor for the connection to get going again.

This always happens after about an hour and it doesn't matter if only one laptop is switched on or all of them are in use. All the machines use WPA security and Windows XP, vista and 7 are all used.

Is there anything that can be done about this?? I've tinkered with a couple of the wireless security settings and it seems to happen somewhat less often now. As a person I live with is visually disabled, I have to reset his laptop's wifi connection too whenever it happens and he has to restart his laptop to get it working if I'm not there.

    Hi,

Best to get a different router, never had any issues with our Eircom Broadband, then the old Netopia clapped up, Eircom provided the Zycel as a replacement .... never had such heartache as with this device, must have called Eircom at least 10 times about it, each time they would NEVER admit that the hardware could have been the issue, even though by the end we had basically categorically proven that this was the case, I have since purchased an old Netopia Router for a tenner on adverts and since this has been installed, several months ago now, I have had 2 disconnects, one of which was my own fault

Anyway. Long story short IMO, the Zycel routers are piles of poop :P Eircom have scrapped the bottom of the barrel with these units and are sticking by their guns with them, there are lots of threads here with people complaining about them but Eircom will not listen ... they even sent out a technician to the house twice to run a line test ... told em the line is fine, it's the hardware, they disagreed and sent him anyway. On both occasions the technician could find nothing wrong at the exchange or directly at the line in the house, but that bad were the disconnects that I was on the phone one day with the Eircom Support and during my 30 MINUTE phonecall with them, the broadband sync dropped 3 times .... I am just waiting for a better provider to pop up in my area then I 'll be jumping ship as I am very peaved that Eircom would never accept even the slightest responsibility for this and take some initiative on these clearly useless Routers they are supplying people with.

    Hi mark,

Did you fully read the thread title? My problem is with a Zyxel wifi router/modem. The P660HW v.3 I think, the standard issue router that comes with new broadband connections.

As for getting a different router, I don't have the money for that and I wouldn't trust getting a second-hand router from adverts or ebay etc. Surely it's up to eircom to provide a working router if it is faulty?

Is this a problem that happens with all the new Zyxel routers?

Hi - At least 5 of my calls were asking for a different router, one of the old Netopia ones not these new Zycel ones, I was told first they only had Zycel ones now, and then was tole as I am now out of contract with Eircom, that if I wanted a replacement Zycel one, I would have to pay 50 quid to get it or sign a new 1 year contract wherein it would be free

Anyway, I will not be signing a new contract with Eircom, I'll be waiting until UPC can provide me with BB then bailing out like a hot snot .....

    Hi To_be_confirmed and Grudgebringer
I can understand both your opinions and frustration here and from what you say it does appear to be a problem with modem connection. Have either of you been supplied a replacement modem at any time?
Would you mind PM ing me your tel numbers and I can chase both of your cases. Maybe get a resolution for you here.
    Regards
    Tony

At least I don't think I'm frustrated, yet! I was more exasperated at the link for a netopia technical support when I pointed out I had a ZyXel router. I haven't called eircom support about it yet as I was hoping there was something quick and simple like a firmware upgrade I could do before going down that road. So I haven't had a replacement router.

I will be sending you a PM shortly.

    Hi To_be_confirmed

Yes that makes sense, apologies for that. We maybe able to upgrade your firmware from here. Can you let me know which modem you have and which ver of firmware currently loaded.
    • in the address bar of your browser, type in 192.168.1.254
    • Click Go.
    • you will asked for password which should be broadband1
    • You will then see the firmware which should be ver 3.70
    • If version is different than this PM your email and I can forward the latest firmware to upload. Most modems should have the latest version.

It took me a while, but I eventually called up eircom and a new Zyxel router was sent out. The same problem is definitely happening again. Loss of wifi connection every hour, which returns after 5 minutes or else I have to restart the wifi adapter a couple of times before connecting is successful.

Can someone in eircom please sort out this problem finally for me? It looks like the router is the problem here.

    Thanks for your post.

If you can PM your home phone number or eircom Account Number, I will be able to assist you.

Don't worry if you don't have your case reference from eircom Technical Support, as I will be able to fully investigate when you called into them and what their analysis was.

Let me know your telephone number as soon as you can.

    Kind regards,
    Ant
