I hate getting my hair done!!

Yeah.. I can't be the only one.

I'm sick of going in to the hairdressers, telling them what I want and then them not even listening and telling you what they think would suit you. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all ears if they suggest maybe a small change to what you want if they think it genuinely look better but I cannot stand it when they do something completely different to what you asked for.

I feel awkward enough as it is, sitting there watching someone hack off my hair while sh1ting on while I smile and pretend to love what she's doing.

I'm only posting this because this week, I have to get my hair done. I have a presentation due in college the week after next and I'll be damned if I go in, looking like I do now.

My question is, how do I get it across clearly what I want?

My hair is dark and I'd really like my hair to be like Rihanna's bob with the fringe in this video:

Does anyone know what I should ask for?

Any help is appreciated.. thanks :)

Two things I've found to be helpful, and as someone with long, curly hair, I've had some pretty crap haircuts!

Firstly, pictures. Bring in loads, different angles of the cut if you can. Literally show them what you want!

Secondly, if you have the time, go for a consultation before you make your appointment. This means you have time to discuss exactly what you want, and get the hairdressers full feedback. I know I've sometimes found that when I go in straight for the cut, I feel rushed and don't have time to think about what the hairdresser is saying or suggesting. I'm sure you know yourself - Me "I want this"
    Hairdresser "How about this?"
    Me "Um... ah.... Ok?!"
On my last hair cut I went in off the street and asked for a consultation. He was with me for about 15 minutes, had a good look at my hair and talked about what I wanted, and what he could do for me. I felt confident going back for my appointment and came out with an excellent cut that hasn't been tended to in four months! Score!

The consultation doesn't sound like a bad idea, thanks :D
I'm going to toni and guy.. can't hack peter marks production belt style of haircutting. It will cost me an arm and a leg, hope it will be worth it.

I despise getting my hair done. Its expensive, they never do what I want and it takes ages. I'm often tempted to just head to the barbers 5 minutes away and get it done for a tenner, I have short hair, all I ever want is for them to take like half a centimeter off.

That's where I went! I think they do student deals Monday to Wednesday, best to ring ahead and ask. I was charged around €125 for a cut, all over colour and curly blow dry. The cut was from the guy who owns it.

I find the independent salons better than the chains - currently going to one in Rathmines, actually must be going there for 5 years now! It always seemed less rushed than PM or T&G and certainly less aggressive. I don't actually know what I want but say some vague words and my hairdresser does a cut that suits my face and my fine hair. It's not cheap but it is worth it

Whats the hair dresser in Rathmines called? And whats the pricing like?

    Thanks.

Vanilla, it's near Slatterys (up the little narrow street, if you know it?). Think top guy (Dan - he's lovely) is €65, mine is €55 or €60 (brenda, she owns the salon) and the other girls a little cheaper. They do have a price list in the window if you are passing. Used to pay €120 for a half head and cut (which is why I am uncertain on price for cut alone). Given I have dead straight hair it's incomprehensible to me how many hairdressers can't actually cut it evenly and straight in other places. If you are thinking of a colour maybe PM me if you want.

I have similar fellings OP, I find it hard to find a stylist who will listen to what i want, as most i've come across will just give you "yeah yeah" and then do their own thing. I haven't actually been inside a salon in probably a year now, i'm lucky enought to have hair that looks after itself, but i did a diy trim a few weeks ago and got the OH to straighten the back for me :D

The only thing i'll say is stick to your guns-when they start to tell you that they don't think what you've suggested will work, or its old fashioned, or they have something else in mind, tell them no-you've come in prepared to pay good money to have your hair cut in a way that you want, and if they are not able to do that then you will get up and walk out-its amazing how quickly they change their minds! Don't be bullied by a stylist, and don't sit there and pretend to be happy, you have to live with the result!

The style Rihanna has in the video is a slightly graduated long bob, tell the stylist you need lots of layers in the back but don't let them use thinning scissors unless you have very thick hair!

    Thanks for your help.

I know how you feel OP, starting a new job next week so need a new hair cut, but I've never been happy with a cut from a hairdressers. I used to cut my own and was way happier with it, but will needa a neater cut this time so have to to a salon!
Let us know how you get on with wherever you choose.

OP - consultation is a must...spend 5-10 minutes talking to whoever is going to do your hair to get an idea of whether or not they get what you're talking about...pick a day when the salon is not too busy ( mid-week I suppose) so you're not rushed out.

I've also given up on the major salons over the past few years...mind you it did take a long time to find a stylist that I'm happy with..totally worth it now though!

OP just to warn you, I’ve been to Toni and Guy a few times and been seen to by a few stylist and they tended to all do a very similar hair cut despite what I’ve asked for. Every time I went I asked for a trim with a few long layers for movement, but not for my hair to be thinned out. Well every time I was fecking scalped! They always took off an extra couple of inches and gave me so many layer my hair was constantly dishevelled….I can only describe it as on emo style haircut…when there are so may layers it’s almost a mullet haircut. :(
And I’m not alone in experiencing this; a few people I know have had a similar haircut despite asking for something else. I think it must be something to do with how they are trained.

I totally understand OP. I think for years I really had a strong phobia about cutting my hair cut (tonsurephobia!!) and now once I don't leave it too long between appointments I'm better. However I just moved back to Dublin just after finding a stylist in Cork with whom I felt comfortable with and didn't try and empty my bank account!

Kinda dreading getting mine done at the moment though since I'm probably going to a new place! Trying to persuade myself I don't need to get it done since I'll be back in Cork soon for a trip and can make an appointment then and that sure I only got it done in November.

Oh and I always know exactly what I want and tell them and sometime it's still a hit and miss. I don't get it. I have long straight hair, it's not that complicated!
