Why? Why do people go to these?

    Bloody hell.

Another hotel rang us to see if we could do a function for them, as they got caught short. Then we found out afterwards it was one of these faux auction/"Liquidation Sales."

Well feck me, the CROWDS of people that turned up for it! I mean there was easily 600 people, looking to get their hands on an Xbox Kinect for €99 or a small Hiatian child for €30.

And some people that I know, that I would have thought were intelligent enough. You know, I thought they could chew AND walk at the same time. Now...I'm not so sure.

How are people still falling for these?

They should buy them together in the package deal, it's cheaper.

Yeah its funny, but you cant stop some people believing that they ARE going to get that Kinect for next to nothing.
But they end up buying a load of crap the the "Sales Guys" are only to happy to get rid of.

    Human nature 0 - 1 Greed

The con? The con is that anything that they have "worth buying" is ually bought by a team member posing as a member of the crowd, which they can "sell" at another sale. If it's an auction, they use planted members to up the price. Other times you get the box and there is nothing inside. Or it could be broken.

Seems you got caught yourselves OP if you allowed such an event to be held at your establishment. The biggest issue for these sales people is trying to get into a reputable establishment as this is the biggest confidence builder among the public.
Seems the other hotel got wise & past this off to yourselves.

    Haha.
Thats something else isnt it. So its the ol' go to some area, con them, move on to the next. Repeat.

Just talked with my dad about these. He remembers them going about. Says one particular english group known for doing it in the 80s/90s.

    Yup, we got caught out.

In the end, the people running the "sale" didn't even turn up.

Same kind of mugs that give some French Conman in Donegal 20 million euro in a get rich quick scheme(Ponzi) Its get rich quick alright. Him getting rich quick.

With all the publicity about ponzi's because of Bernard Maddow in the media recently too. Thick feckers.
