    Hey y'all,
In 6th year at the moment, applying for waterford IT hopefully want to study exercise and health or sports and recreation.

Im very into bodybuilding and weight lifting and was wondering what are the gyms facilities like in the college?
Would they suit a serious weight lifters needs?
Heavy dumbbells, olympic barbells squat rack, deadlift area etc..

Or would I be better off joining a gym outside the college vicinity.

Thanks for any answers in advance!

    Hey y'all,

Heavy dumbbells, olympic barbells squat rack, deadlift area etc..
it has none of these, you need to join a private gym, i usually work out at home when im in college :/ and do full body routines on weekends lulz, cause it doesnt even have free weights for bench press/squats etc, cant you look into a diff college no?, UCC has a decent gym, even though its usually full, havent seen the CIT one but heard its decent, unless ur hell bent on going to WIT i'd avoid it much better colleges and college gyms out there :)

im doing something completely different but there is a course in CIT called leasure management or something, alotta people in my gym at home are on that course + doing a placement in the gym, then there is P.E stuff in UCC, but really depends where ur from lol, if ur from waterford ur better off going to WIT, unless u wanna move out etc

i'd suggest UCD, NUIG and UCC as the top college choices though if they have your course, if not, i'd go with DIT, CIT, and then WIT, im pretty sure theres PE teaching in UL as well i know someone in that course, and i'd pick UL over WIT any day, WIT is a joke, no offence to anyone whos there studying with me.

I wouldn't take what Mr Imported says too seriously .... He has a serious gripe with WIT & half his posts are about slating the college & telling people to go to CIT.

I'd recommend going down to WIT when you have time & taking a look at the gym.

yea i agree. you should visit the college and have a look at the gym yourself.

as far sWT goes it is an excellent college compared to most IT's. the above postr slating the place hasnt a clue mate. i was in LIT and trust me it was more like a big scholl than a college. i visited CIT and it looks like a joke. the facilities in WIT are not the most advanced in the world but you should see corks:rolleyes: as for Dublin IT the lesss said the better. the campus consists of buildings in different parts of the city center making it seem like more of a "bruce college template"(its a leaving cert private school that just rents rooms all over the city)

visit Waterford. youll see its a nice place. the city is suprisingly lovely and the college is well run(and one of the architecture students so we have it bad compared to others)

asd for the gym its a typical college gym. its cheap to use and has the basic things that the majority will use.

it may not suit your needs but youll know yourself either way when you see it yourself.

either way good luck with applying mate

The gym is mainly machines and treadmills, with a small free weights area only.
However there is a suitable gym just down the road, where the swimming pool is, as I recall

Is the W.I.T gym called the Fitness Suite on the main campus or do W.I.T call the Waterford Crystal their gym?

The Gym in WIT is called the Fitness Suite, the Waterford Crystal one is separate.

Lads, are there showers and/or lockers at the WIT gym?

Yes, but iirc you need to bring your own lock the locker.

OP if your serious as you are about your weight training the Waterford Weight Training Club, 5 mins walk from college is where you need to go. The fitness suite is what it is. For example max dumbell weight there is 60lbs,in wwtc max would be 200lbs,plenty of powerracks etc. For an IT looking to be a Uni,fitness facilities are shocking and btw exercise and health studies is a degree that may look nice on the wall in a frame, but will have little use in setting you up in a comfortable well paid job. I know the majority of the crop of fourth years who graduated to be told there are very few jobs out there for them...but its all just advice:)

I wouldn't be worried about finding a gym in Waterford to suit your needs. As said above the Waterford Weight training gym. Theres various others like The Kingfisher, Goldstone Gym and many more located in the City. The college gym isn't good but theres loads more gym that would falicate your needs

You might want to take a trip out to the WIT sports campus in cariganore! The facilities are state of the art!

In the cork road campus you a reduced fee for the year if you're a student. Its more expensive for the public. Or you can pay per session i think

There's actually no Gym facilities out in carriganore. I inquired when i began working out here and its only the Gym on the Cork Road

If your planning on taking Sports and rec you'll have access to the gym upstairs too, I've never been in it, so I cant confirm exactly whats in there but it looks to be mostly designed for weight lifting, theres some olympic rings hanging from the ceiling too

So that upstairs one is specificially just for the exercise related courses?

Anyone ever join up the WCFE (Waterford College of Further Education) gym when they studied there or if you studied there? Not a bad gym, most of the stuff you would want.
