buying privately (paperwork) protecting yourself

    Hey all,

so thinking of buying privately and just wondering if the below is the correct procedure to avoid getting done (leaving out the possibility that I'm getting a lemon mechanically)

    1) get vin and engine number and do a motorcheck/hpi check

    2) check these numbers match and the owners name is correct on the vehicle registration cert (check owners photo ID also)

    3) carry out the transaction at the owners home address - not outside of it, make a note of the address

    4) pay by cheque/bank draft

    5) make sure seller fills out your details on the vehicle registration cert

    6) get a written signed receipt from the seller

    7) take vehicle with you

await new vehicle registration cer/logbook from shannon to be sent out a week or two after?

my question is as follows (and apologies if this has been asked before)

you have to presumably trust the seller to send off the change of ownership/notify this to shannon/dept of transport

presumably they will only do this when your cheque clears but you should be able to take the vehicle with you on the day you give them the cheque?

what happens if they dont send off the change of ownership details and you have paid them + have the vehicle...chase them...tell authorities?

    have I missed anything?

+ anyone know, is it the same process for motorcycles as well?

ya pretty much have it bang on there but most private sellers will want cash. heres a trick to make sure the log book is posted straight away, bring a stamped envalope addressed to the authority in shannon, show it to the seller and say you will put it in the post straight away or bring them to the nearest post box to do it themselves. to many people put this on the long finger after they sell a car! same for motorbikes.

    what ya buyin??

Take a picture of completed form.

Obviously verify the service history with dealers stamped on book and get someone who knows cars to inspect

Don't think many would let you take a car for a cheque, or draft for that matter plenty of forgeries have surfaced.

Re motorbikes check that frame and engine numbers are correct according to the reg document

jaysus...dont fancy carrying that much cash on me at all + there is no paper trail afterwards if the seller is fcukin around

is the idea not that you give the cheque and that they then wait to post off the change of ownership document when the cheque clears? ....that way both buyer and seller have some assurance, they can report it as theft as they still have the official vehicle reg cert

although if I was selling I suppose what is to stop some chancer giving fake cheque and disappearing presumably you get over this by providing seller with drivers license/passport etc

seriously though - although I can see the logic handing over a wad of cash seems dodgy in the extreme..there must be another way, that leaves the buyer with no comeback

We used to make a contract with 2 copies, where are the car details, seller ones and ours.

Both signed and each will keep the copy. simple :)

Mw X sold the car to Ms Y
Date and signed by both sides.
    Done

cheers, have a beautiful direct import 97 with all the extras and some extra extras if you know what I mean but didnt notice when buying the steering wasn't tracking properly (not a huge deal but a pain in the hole at the time and was amazed I didn't notice it) so go a bit overboard doing mechanical checks now

    3) carry out the transaction at the owners home address - not outside of it, make a note of the address personally i wouldnt let someone view a car at my home. i would meet in a public place and if the buyer was genuine and if they wanted to come back to the house no ploblem

    4) pay by cheque/bank draft no way cash only for me

    5) make sure seller fills out your details on the vehicle registration cert
as said its best to post it together

    6) get a written signed receipt from the seller
    never done this
    7) take vehicle with you
make sure you have your insurance transfered over and dont forget to bring your licence with you!

you should be able to know if the seller is dodgey by talking to them and listen out to see if they mix up their story about the car

DEfinitely, I sent hundreds over the years, government departments tend to be all freepost anyway.

Am thinking transfer of insurance on the day not strictly necessary for the bike anyway if it pans out - will be trailering it - presume that's O.K. - know I take the risk of damage to bike and theft on myself but as not riding it away presumably dont need insurance transfer for third party etc right then?

fairly sure of myself on this one anyway

have given and received written receipts (notepaper) with amounts signature date, whats being sold in the past [admittedly for smaller value machinery items /trailer etc]

not sure exactly what use it would be to you but it couldn't hurt surely... and why would a genuine seller object?...surprised no one has ever asked you

also surprised majority saying they would not accept cheque/money order/bank draft/postal order

I was under the impression that you had to have a paper trail and handing over a wad of cash was asking for it?

Pay particular attention to the ladder frame as they can rust badly particularly if they're caked in shoite. Make sure its been tested recently.

Make sure super select works alright and engages and disengages properly.

There are great machines, bought one in 2009.
